8. BEN MURPHY, former co-star on "Alias Smith and Jones" will become assistant star on Lome Greene's new "Griff" detective series. "But I absolutely refuse to be your surrogate son," Ben warned Lome. There is no opening for a detective's aide in the new "Toma" series but Susan Strasberg, that charmer, has landed the next best option. She'll play Patty Toma, the detective's wife, a role she created in the 90-minute pilot.

Cecily Tyson will star in "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittmann," a two-hour drama set for CBS-TV next season. The drama traces the life of slave girl from the close of the Civil War until she reaches the age of 108 in the 1960s. KQED (Channel 9) will be off the air Saturday and Sunday while its one, lone, delicate, expensive transmitter is being carted from San Bruno Mountain to-the site of the Monster (television tower) on Mount Sutro. Installation is expected to be completed in time to resume programming on Monday. If not, the Senate Watergate night show, beginning at 8 p.m., will be carried by Channel 44.

FOR THE EXUBERANT tops in big time nostalgia, tune to "The Music World of Joe Thompson," Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., KQED-FM (88.6) His theme tomorrow is a big wallow in bathos on "Vintage Radio" honoring the ever popular Edna Meredith Willson, Ben Grauer, David Ross, W. C. Fields Ffjed Waring, Burns and Allen, and many more. The Thompson show is a tonic, and believe me, Joe is a joy to listen to.

Burt Reynolds figures his new late Saturday night NBC discussion shows will do well because "they will compete with old Richard Egan movies." Av Westin asserts his forthcoming "ABC News Close-Up" series will be keynoted to relevance. His oromise: "There'll be no wild chases down the Amazon after some rare species of animal, or evolution of the chimpanzees." A pity.
