ONUS'S Owner-Built Housing Program is a national demonstration project for 14 families which will jointly construct homes they will buy with conventional financing on surplus lois which have been vacant from four to five years.

The sites are purchased from the City of Oakland for $3,000 each. Participants will Join In two groups of seven families and work in groups on the houses. "This project sponsored by ONUS in cooperation with Oakland and Fidelity Savings and Loan Association is an exciting and innovative program for our community," says A. C. Meyer Fidelity's president.

He says Fidelity tailored the financing for moderate Income families. The lot where the McKinley family plans to build their home Is on Avenue, between E. 14th and Holly Streets, In East Oakland. The family will be trained in coastruction techniques and supervised by professional construction personnel and is obligated to provide 40 family hours of lalxr each week on the construction of their home. Highly technical and most finish work will be subcontracted.

One of 180 applicants bidding for the opportunity, the McKinley family plans to liegin coastruction of their home on June 21, Both Mary and Stanley McKinley plan to work on their home. "We learned of the Program from a newspaper article and we were excited about the possibility of owning our own home and building It," says Mrs. McKlnley. She adds "I'm looking forward to learning new skills and a trade." Recalling childhood memories of barn raising in his native, Florida, ith which Mr. McKinley compared the Program, he 6tated, "Everyone chipped in to help neighbors.

I'll be most excited when the Job is finished. I want to get It underway." The McKlnley's two children, daughter, Oneisha, 7, and son, Montlse, 5, share In their parents' enthusiasm. Construction equipment and workmen at the site are doing land Improvements, putting In sewers and utility lines. Architects at the University of California, Berkeley, have contributed the beginning design stages of the project and made the model used in the presentation to the City of Oakland. The actual three-bedroom, two-bath homes to be built were designed by Architect Richard McCarty of Morro Bay who planned homes for a similar self-help housing project in San Luis Obispo through the VS.

The construction of the first seven homes is expected to take about 10 months. Rev.
