Friday with a 60, 7-5 win over Lynne Flachman of Santa Rosa. In another Friday match, Louie bounced Erika Smith of Piedmont 63, 64, before upsetting second seed Helle Viragh, 6-7 (5-7).

6-1, 64, in Saturday's semifinals. Baker and Viragh were hard-servingvolleying players with power, yet Louie successfully used her powerful passing shots to win. "I had to go through three matches (one singles and two doubles) yesterday," said Louie after her finals win Sunday. "I was kind of tired out there. But I had enough left to do my best" In another footnote on the Louie tennis family, sister Peanut has already entered the U.S.

Open which starts Aug. 29 and leaves for New York on Saturday. She hurt her left knee Feb. 21 during a Virginia Sluns match in Oakland and has been off the circuit since. the personable Louie, whose well-known younger sister Peanut, 23, is already a full-fledged professional.

"I'm not sure if I'm ready for that I like teaching now, and tournaments like these I enter and play basically for fun." Louie's strong points include excellent fundamental ground strokes which buried opponent after opponent last week. Her arsenal includes all manner of spinning and slicing shots which are kept purposefully low to confuse foes. Til admit my serve is the weakest party of my game, and I need improvement there," she said. "But I am pleased with the way I've been playing, and naturally it's fun to win." Louie began the tournament last Thursday by downing Jackie Baker of Cupertino, 6-1, 6-2, and followed up on llllllIIIIIIIIIIItllllllllllllllfllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllltlltlltlllflllllllllllllllltlllllMIIIIIIIIIIlltlllllllllllllltlllllllllllllllltllllllllllllllllllllllltllf' ELL By Gerry Carroll Examiner staff writer MORAGA Phil Lenhoff and Garth Haynes are two East Bay athletes who are struggling amid the ferocious world of professional tennis. Both players are headed to New York this week and will try and qualify for the VS.

Open, which starts Monday, Aug. 29. Lenhoff might have the inside edge. The Moraga pro won last week's Northern California Tennis Association Sectional tournament and has momentum on his side. "I'm 330th in the world on the men's computer rankings," said Lenhoff after beating San Francisco's Peter Pearson, 7-6 (12-10), 7-6 (7-4), in the Sunday NCTA men's singles final.

"They pick the draw from the first 130, then qualifying from the first 400 or so. I'm optimistic this year about my chances." Haynes, a tall (6-5), hard-serving player who is also strong in doubles, will take his 370th rating into the qualifying wars. "I'm teaming up with Craig Edwards, who at one time was 90th in the world," said Haynes, a 26-year-old pro from Orinda who's rated 170th in the world in doubles with Edwards. "As for singles, I feel I'm ready for that, too. Unless you're a tremendous doubles player, it's difficult to make a living at it Singles is where the better money is.

That's why I'm heavily into singles now. "I've taken three months off the pro circuit so I can make some changes in my game I hope positive changes." Haynes reached the men's singles quarterfinals in the NCTA Sectional before losing a tough 7-6 (74), 6-2 match to Harold Hecht of Berkeley. But he came back to reach the finals in the men's doubles, teaming with Jeff Everist of Orinda, and lost in a thrilling finals match to Pearson and Ty Fernandez, 7-6 (74), 6-7 (4-7), 64. "I've gotten over some minor injuries," Haynes said. "We'll see what happens at Flushing Meadows." Why doesnt Marisa Louie become a star on the women's professional tennis circuit? Only she knows for sure.

The San Francisco teaching pro certainly has the potential to become a world-class player. At 25 years of age, Louie has shown she is, at least, among the top players in Northern California. Her victory in the NCTA Sectional proves the point Louie was virtually unstoppable most of the way in recording five straight singles wins including Sunday's women's singles final when she upset top-seeded Barrie Bullmore of Los Altos Hills, 7-5, 60.
