Page May 27, 1975 THE ARTS Your Health Reserpine danger I don't see any useful purpose in not telling patients what they an getting. It was useful decades ago 4 The dog who saved this film when doctors had to deal with all sorts of human ills and had few things to help them. In those days medicine was long on art and short on science. That situation no longer exists and the danger is of being short on art translated into -bedside manner. All medicine bottles should also have an expiration date on them to indicate when the medi should not take more than 0.1 to 0.25 milligrams a day.

I am concerned about your description of your medicines. The tablets come in 1 milligram, 0.25 milligram, and 0.1 milligram sizes. The two larger ones are scored so they can be broken in half. The small 0.1 milligram tablet is not. If you are past the two-week point in your medication and happen to be taking three or four tablets a day I think you should discuss this with your doctor.

I don't think anyone should change the medicines he or she is getting without the doctor's approval. That doesn't mean you shouldn't ask though. You may not know what size tablets you are taking. Serpasil and reserpine are the same thing. I'm of the school that thinks patients should know what they are getting and why.

That means the bottles of medicines should be labeled with the exact contents including the size of tablets. By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D. DEAR DR. LAMB 1 am 67 years old and have high blood pressure very bad.

I have been taking one-half tablet of reserpine in the morning and Serpasil, one tablet, with meals each day. I read that they cause cancer of the breast. Should I stop taking them? I used to take Aldomet and I changed doctors and he put me on the two I Just mentioned. DEAR READER You can safely forget the scare about breast cancer from Serpasil (reserpine). Further studies failed to show any significant correlation.

Your big danger is not cancer but the side effects of reserpine. If a person takes too much over a period of time it can cause a severe depression, even to the point of causing suicide. Anyone who has a history of depression should not use these medicines at all. The initial dose of Serpasil is higher for two weeks to induce the desired effect. Thereafter a person cine in the bottle or container should be discarded.

The same applies to over-the-counter' home remedies you can buy. All should have a throwaway date on them That includes vitamin preparations You can do a lot to help control your blood pressure in your daily living patterns. Many people devel op normal blood pressure by losing any excess pounds of fat, even a small amount, and improving their physical condition. Stopping stimii' lants, such as coffee, tea and colas is also helpful. By Jeanne Miller "Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood" starts with a marvelously whimsical premise that director Michael Winner is unable to develop in rich comic terms.

The film, which opened yesterday at the Regency is loosely based on' the exploits of Rin Tin Tin, the canine movie star whose popularity gave the industry a welcome impetus during the silent screen era. Art Carney plays a low-budget studio chief who is facing bankruptcy until he becomes involved with Bruce Dern, a bus driver who aspires to become a movie producer. Dern's girl friend, Madeline Kahn, is befriended by Won Ton Ton, a gorgeous and very smart German Shepherd capable of all kinds of highly cinematic tricks. The dog, who adores Miss Kahn, won't perform without her. So Carney, despite his better judgment, hires the inept Dern and the untalented Miss Kahn in order to get Won Ton Ton to his studio.

Gifted comedy performers, like Carney, Kahn and Phil Silvers (as Carney's addle-pated brother), show little of their usual skill under Winner's heavy-handed direction, particularly Miss Kahn whose broad mugging performance clearly indicates her need of a strong director who exercises restraint. Dern is wooden and unappealing as the bus driver turned producer and Ron Leibman is embarrassing in a drag queen impersonation 'of Rudolph Valentino as a movie idol who makes a flop film with tlife dog. Movie buffs will be delighted, however, by the cameo appearances of about 65 stars who show up regularly as studio personnel and hangers-on. We see Jackie Coogan, Stepin Fetchit, Edgar Bergen, Ethel Merman, Victor Mature, Milton Berle, John Carradine, Ann Miller, the Ritz Brothers, Joan Blondell, Andy Devine and a host of others whose very presence creates the Hollywood nostalgia that the film is aiming for. Heloise The bachelor dishwasher AUGUSTUS VON SCHUMACHER (he's the one in front) with Madeline Kahn and Bruce Dern.

Dear Heloise: When I'm driving with out a "navigator" and have an unfamiliar route, I write my travel route in duty. It's a much quicker cleaning job for me, as I find that the dishwater itself does not get too sudsy as sometimes happens. It also saves on the detergent itself, and the dishwashing job is done in half the time. Another great thing about this is if you happen Dear Heloise: May I Intrude among all you women? I am a bachelor and I have reaped so many hints from your housewives that here Is one I shall pass along In return. I never put detergent or soap in my dishpan any more when I do the dishes.

I fill the dishpan with the hot water and work the soap on my sponge or dishcloth. Then I start to wash the dishes and here's an easy way from a man: As each plate is picked up from the dishpan, take your soapy rag and wipe away. A minute amount of suds does a definite large script on a piece of paper and use a hat pin to secure it to the car seat If only Winner (who is most noted for his four films with Charles Bronson, including "Death had served up the light, frothy confection that is fleetingly evident from time to time, the film might have been enormously entertaining. But his clumsy and essentially humorless approach to the film's fragile material ultimately does it in. However, dog fanciers of every age will find the film captivating, it seems to me.

For despite all the hig-name competition, Won Ton Ton (played by Augustus Von Schumacher) is indubitably the star. ,1 The dog is smart, brave and perfectly beautiful and everyone can root for him at the fade-out when he is finally reunited with his beloved mistress. He is an extraordinary actor as well and seems to be the only cast member who was unaffected by the film's leadeh direction. within eyeball range. As an example, Main Street to Tucker Road, right to Smith's grocery, left to 15 Starlight St.

etc. This works especially well for highway driving. Mary Grace maeys to have just a few dirty plates, glasses or dishes, all one has to do is wet this soap-filled sponge again under the faucet, scour quickly, rinse off and put in that drainer to dry. I am positive that your mothers, who do not have as much time as we widowers and bachelors have, will love this hint. Will you please pass it along? Joel Ginsberg A romance foiled by brats Dear Heloise: I keep a flashlight in my husband's sock drawer so he can always find the right color to go with his outfit Marilyn Biggs By John Stark The best thing about "The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea," which opened yesterday at the Ghirardelli Square is the theme song, a SPECIAL EVENT haunting piano piece by Kris Kristofferson called "Sea Dreams." Ironically, Kristofferson is also one of the worst aspects of this bizarre drama.

As Jim Cameron, Sarah Miles' sea-faring lover, he gives a cliched performance that looks and sounds like John Wayne doing Captain Ahab. The heavy-handed film, directed by Lewis John Carlino, is based on a Japanese novel by Yukio Mushima. The setting has been transplanted to an English village seaport where Ms. Miles is Anne Osborne, a lonely young widow who runs an antique store. She lives in a two-story white house, and has a peculiar 13-year-old son named Jonathan (Jonathan Kahn).

The kid has a peephole from his bedroom into his mother's. At night, he watches her masturbate, and when Kristofferson shows up, make love. KRIS KRISTOFFERSON is the sailor who fell in love; with the widow, Sarah Miles. Miles handles a complex role with much aplomb, butjs severely hampered by the corny dialog. Upon reunion with Kristofferson, her first words are, "You smell terrific!" The shaggy-haired youth belongs to a secret boys' club dominated by the Chief (Earl Rhodes), a sadistic cynic who enjoys dissecting live cats and feeding lighted firecrackers to seagulls.

The Chief, who looks GREAT AMERICAN MUSIC HALL presents. TWO BIG BANDS and talks like a pint-sized David Frost, loathes big people and commands his followers to resist adult tyranny. But just why Jonathan belongs to this Lord of the Flies group makes no sense. Jonathan has a passion for ships, and one day when an American steamer comes to port, his mother takes him on board for a tour, which is led by Kristofferson, Ms. Miles asks him home for dinner, and they wind up spending a few nights together.

They fall in love, and after a few months at sea, he comes back to marry her. (Will Kristofferson always be ftuiii iiitiir -i "T-f r.ni -i iim fci i Jtm saving horny young widows?)
