Two other commissioners, James Hay, of Canada, and John McMillan, were nominated but withdrew. Deadlock Averted.

A lifetime ambition was achieved as the high council chose the dyna mic daughter oc tne rounder ror tne suoreme leadership of one of the world's greatest militant-religious organizations. The delegates, who have been meeting here for the past week discussing the election procedure, gave the commander 32 votes on the fifth ballot this being four ballots more than the necessary two-thirds majority. A close race between the United States leader and Commissioner. Mapp, present chief of staff, developed en the first two ballots, it waa learned, but supporters of the three other nominees quickly threw their backing to Commander Booth. Thus was averted the deadlock which the council had feared.

Commander Evangeline Booth, the fourth daughter of General William Booth, will be 9 years old this Christmas. She has been a resident of the United States for 29 years. At an early age she became one of her fsther's most able assistsnts in his work among the poor of the East End of London, and preached her first sermon standing chslr In the open street. she organized a mission and nursing corps, taking It herself to the Klondyk and sharing the hardships and danger of the prospectors 'In 1903, Miss Booth was appointed to thmational leadership of the Army In the United State, which post she held until her nomination to the high command today. Her favorite Instrument are the harp and the piano. L. Beid, B.A.", Member of SchooJ of commerce oun. Miss Edith Lillian Feid. B.A.. a member of th leeching staff of the Hiffh School ot Commerce for number of years, died Sunday morning In the Civic Hospital after a somewhat brief but severe illness.

Miss Reid wss a native of Waterdown. Ont youngest daugh. ter ot the late Alexander Reid' of that village. In her younger day eh taught In public schools and subsequently enrolled at Queen's University. Kingston, from which she graduated as Bachelor of Arts.

About 11 years ago she came to Ottawa and built for herself a reputation as a teacher of exceptional ability. She was a specialist in commercial sub jects and many a student now starling in business life will cherish her memory as teacher and friend. She waa a member of the Univer sity Club and Queen's Alumnae Association, and enjoyed a wide circle of friendship not only In the educational sphere but in church and social circles generally, one was identified with. Dominion Church for a number of years, later transferring her membership to St James' United Church. Her brother and only surviving member of the family, George Reid.

Russ Col umbo, screen actor and internationally known dance orchestra leader, died In hospital here tonight a few hour after he was shot 4s the bead by the accidental discharge of a pistol at th bom of Lansing Brown, portrait photographer.

Brown, showing Col umbo a French duelling pistol, accidentally dropped a lighted match on the cap, firing the pistol. The bullet hit a mahogany dresser, then ricocheted and struck Columbo Just below th eye and entered th brain. Didn't Knew It Waa Leaded Lansing said he did not' know th pistol was loaded. Columbo waa Immediately taken to a hospital and died while preparations war being; made for an operation to remove th bullet Columbo, also well-known as a singer, recently haa been working tor ine universal stacuos.
