A7 Jan. 30, 1982 S.F. EXAMINER Tom Campbell As for many of the other performers wh groups are at the top of the rock pile, only their must devoted fans will recognize the faces of many of them and be able to put a name to each face. Why? Ls it becaase record labels are not spending the money to promote the images of their rockers these days? Or is it simply that, among today's "comers," there are so few performers with the strong personalities necessary to make them "household It may be a little bit of both, but I believe the latter is most often the case. There simply are not a lot of people around in pop groups now who possess the magnetism of Rod Stewart, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Kenny Rogers or Neil Young, all group members when they started their careers, all successful solo performers today.

The group member holl do her bit for credit card ads in the near future, by the way, is Janis Siegel of Manhattan Transfer. You know her. tit were nwer heard of again. Jimmy Destri, keyboard player with Blondie, is now doing a solo with a debut LP, "Heart on a Fleetwood Mac's upcoming 124rack studio album now has a title, "Mirage." Gossips are currently occupied with tales of Stevie Nicks' future with the group. Some say she LU definitely be with FM when the act hits the road In H2; others indicate she's scheduled a recording session for another solo LP during the time of the concert tour.

"Bob Doug McKenrie" (sometimes called the Blues Brothers of Canada; in reality if there is a reality for members of television's "SCTV" cast Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) make their disc debut with a single, 'Take Off," from their first album, "Great White Former 10 cc members Kevin Godley and Lol Creme take their own record label on a shakedown cruise with the first release, "Snack Attack," due in February. An expurgated version of Olivia NewtonJohn's "Physical" video album will be incorporated into an ABC-TV special this season. Buckner Garcia, on hitlists with the novelty record "Pac Man Fever," have an album of game-oriented materia) ready for release next month with cuts like "Do the Donkey Kong," "Coin' Berserk" and "Hyper-Space." The duo, based in Atlanta, does a of jingle work and is not a newcomer on the charts. As producers, they've already been up there on Steve Carlisle's "WKRP in Cincinnati" and EdgtH Groves' "Footprints in the Sand." time marches on. Prior to release of their most recent album, the membership of Foreigner went through a personnel shake-up with Just two originals left in the group, Lou Gramm and Mick Jones.

How could an act which had sold so many nop hits dare to do such a thing? Easy. Diehard aas of Foreigner might notice two new faces; few others would. Can you name and put the right faces on all the members of Molly Hatchet, REO Speed wagon, Loverboy, Queen, Player, Sneaker, Air Supply? How about Balance. Police, the Cars, Alabama, Rush. Skyy, ACDC, the Go Go's, Styx and Journey? OK, so a few of those names are relatively new to record fans, but most of them have more than one hit record to tlieir credit REO Speedwagon, for instance, has been a band for over a decade and their big hit of 1981, "Hi Infidelity," is still high on the charts after a 60-week run.

At one point not too many months ago, all the albums they'd ever cut were on best-seller surveys. Of the groups currently at the top on hitlists, those members with individual identity are usually those ho've had some success with indepedent projects. Like Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers, Phil Collins of Genesis, Debby Harry of Blondie. Naturally, few pop musk devotees will have trouble identifying members of The Whothe Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac or the Beach Boys. But the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys and The Who have been at the forefront of rock music since the early 1960s and Fleetwood Mac's been around since about 1967.

All four acts have suffered through personnel clianges caused by defection of a member or death, but these alterations were duly noted by the public. If we don't know who Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, Stevie Nicks and Mike Love are by now, we never will. HALF NOTES: Olivia Newton John's "Physical" was finally knocked out of the top spot on singles hitlists after a 10-week run. As predicted, Olivia was not ousted by second-placer Foreigner and "Waiting for a Girl Like You." The No. 1 record in the U.S.

at the moment is "I Can't Go for That" by Hall Oates. Fair is fair, the duo's "Private Eyes" was the record Olivia bested when her record hit the top. Gail Zeiler, hitting country charts with "No Place to Hide," is a native of San Jtise where, as an entrepreneur, she ran the South Bay Connection, a company which staged charity concerts and booked talent in local clubs not long ago. Zeiler won the Northern California finals of the Wrangler Country Starsearch spoasored by San Jose's KEEN Radio last year. And you thought winners of talent hunts Are rock stars faceless? A member of a popular contemporary recording act recently announced plans to do a "Do you know me?" commercial for American Express television ads and it's quite likely your personal answer, on viewing the TV spot, will be, "No, I don't" Truth is, the vast majority of members of top rock acts could participate in such an advertising campaign and the answer of the audience would still be, "No, 1 don't." In very few cases is such complete anonymity deliberate.

Members of Kiss rocker intentionally mask themselves in greasepaint, an artifice hich is becoming less necessary as Rubenstein marks his 93rd, 95th or 96th year THE MURDER OF THE THE SCANDAL OF THE THE LOVE AFFAIR OF THE AND THE CENTURY WAS JUST BEGINNING. 13 'AGTIME promoting the pianist by a more "exotic" name. Rubinstein became an American citizen in 1946. He always maintained an apartment in Geneva, and settled here after convalescing from surgery two years ago. His Polish-born wife An iela, who lives in Paris, was among the wellwishers.

The two separated in 1977. were experimenting with changes in tempos and other excesses. He later made an attempt at suicide. Impresario Sol Hurok brought Rubinstein back to America in 1937 and audiences clamored for him. It's said that Hurok changed the spelling of Rubinstein's first name to "Artur" in those years with an eye toward ffiii MOTf' mm op 10 a kwi tmi wiv 5 wa i GENEVA, Switzerland (APi The friends of Arthur Rubinstein, celebrating the venerable pianist's birthday, wished "May he live ISO years!" ticking an extra half-century onto the traditional Polish toast just for good measure.

The Polish-born Rubinstein isn't far from his 100th birthday, but just how far is a matter of some debate. He says he was born in Lodz 95 years ago, Western reference books say he's 93, and the Polish Embassy sent congratulations on his 9tth birthday. But none of this spoiled the party. The artist whom some people call "the pianist of the century'' blew out nine big candles and five small ones as wcllwishers crowded in his Geneva apartment Thursday. He says it was on Jan.

28, 1887, that he "rang the bell at the gate of life as a belated and rather unwanted guest" He was the seventh child in the family of a Lodz textile industrialist But among the telegrams and letters still pouring in Friday was at least one that disputed the date. "We sent him congratulations on his 9tth birthday," said Polish Embassy spokesman Stefan Piwowar. "The official Polish encyclopedia lists the year of his birth as 1886. That is his correct age as far as we are concerned." The German reference book Brtxkhaus gives the same year. Early editions of "Who's Who" published before Rubinstein's best-sell ing 1973 memoirs, "My Young Years" said he was born in 1887.

But the New York Current Biography Yearbook still clings to 1889. According to one account Rubinstein's parents said he was two years younger than he was to keep him from being sent to Russia for the army: Rubinstein's secretary, Annabelle Whitestone, told a reporter he was "full of pep as usual," at his party. "We had visitors the whole day, coming in and out His children telephoned from New York they could not make it" Rubinstein first played in the United States in 1906 but his tour was a flop.
