The picture looks like a very fine steel plate engraving, and Is one of the best pieces of penmanship we have ever seen. We are informed that it required three months to complete this picture, and we believe that it did, for we are satisfied that we could not oduce a similar one in three year. hile this picture, as a work of skill, is surpassed by none, we are sorry to say that the public do not appreciate It as it deserves. We recognize it b-ing from the pen of a well-known and accomplished lady of this city: The grave hides from our sight forever the man we all loved. The whita sands of Cape St. Lucas lie lightly on aa pure a gentleman as ever lived; on at true and good a mau; on a man that did his duty always and at all times to his friends, his eountrv. and his God. Bjrn in the South; educated at Annapolis; an officer in the United Spates Navv an oracer in the Confederate army and navy afloat or ashore, he won a repn ation for gallan'ry that is honored both by the Nortn and the South.

But what recks it to him was a soldier that fought the good fight, and his reward has come to him. He died on his ship and at sta on the broad ta-cifio, and far from his kindred; but there were friends with him who watched and wept, and men's teirs come from the heart. His sailors stood around and listened at the door for some little word of but aa the sun sunk down behind the horizon, to rise again on fairer lands, so sunk his spirit, to rise again in greater glory. Ther- are too few men iu the world like unto him Generous to friend and foe brave in war. gentle in peace, true to all men.

Just asd self- sacr flcing. We have known him in time of tieuble and times of Joy-whenFortune frowned, ami when fortune smiled when davs were dark and when the clouds lowered but the true no bility of bit soul shone through all, and his hand wai always outstret ned to aid the struggling. His comrades who fought with tim at A.anald. son) at Mui reesboro and at Chick manga, will g-ieve whe they thi of him thy loved so well lying in his Wave-washed grave at Cape St. l.uoas.

His shipmates on the St. Mary's the Vlncennes and the Florida will never pass that lonely Cape without a memory of the generous, high-souled man too soon ca led home too Boon for us who wander on the shore. But shall he net be brought from that far off land, back whet women hands shall deck his grave, and where those who loved him can sit and see the ships come op through the Golden Gate from ont of the sunset land, and think here lies one who ha- brought his ship safe to port, against wind and tide, and over troubled seas. it. MORE AUDIT THE SOLD PANIC. New Yofk, September 28. A majority of tne tiro sera adjusted tneir accounts before the (Jommittee 01 the Uold fltoom to-night, without asking any abatement. The state ment of Heath A Co. was received.

Smith, Gould, Martin Ji Go. called on the Commit tee, and stated that their account wonld be sent in immediately. The Committee were still engaged at one o'clock. Jew Iork, beptember Ho. The Times saya the crash in stocks yesterday, it ia said, seriously affected many houses which escaped the crash in gold last week, and houses which suffered by the fall in the gold market and were brought to the verge of ruin, could not De expected to stand the double shock.

It is expected that to-day will reveal the fact that a very large number of firms have gone under. 11 the uold r.xcnange 3ank should fail to meet its obligationa, or if a run should be made on that institution, it is ex pected tbat the crash in Wall street will be overwhelming. tne bans: is in a crit ical condition is certain; that it has lost the confidence 01 the brokers is a fact; and, with this support withdrawn, the fall of that institution muot follow. The Heraid calls on CongTees to enact a law against gold gambling. It holds Bontwell responsible lor tne present bad state of monetary affairs.

Tbe Tribune says the feeling against the Gold Exchange Bank is iustlv deeper than at any previous time. A general uncertainty on Wall street continues, with the expecta tion on the part 01 many that still greater trouDies are aiieaa. Senator Wilson contemplates introducing a bill at the next session of Congress to pre vent the exportation of gold or purchasing gold, unless the full amount of coin sold is actually delivered. jnew xork, September 29. The excite ment to-day in financial circles exceeds tbat of any day yet.

At the opening of tbe Gold Board the Committees reported that all but about forty statements had been received, and they hoped to see the way out of the difficulties to-day. The Board adjourned till afternoon, and in the meantime other statements will be received. Twelve o'clock. No further report has been made public. The Stock Board opened firmer, but the announcement of the failures of Meigs Son.

Fuller. Treat Cox. and Sloan caused a reaction. Quotations are difficult to give. It is rumored that L-ocfewood and several other firms, are in danger of going under, but this is not confirmed.

Two clock. The Gold Exchange Bank has been placed in the hands of a Receiver. xne nas accepted bids 01 000 instead of $2,000,000. Tbere are stormy debates in the Gold Room, producing alternately remarkable de pression ana Duoyancy. failures, receiverships and injunctions form the group of events which have made the day without an equal in the annals of Wall street.

The statement of the Gold Exchange Bank, presented to the Gold Board, expresses the belief that the bank ia solvent, and able to pay all its debts. The bank has not failed or suspended it paid Monday's obligations at the Clearing House in gold, at par; on Tuesday, one million in gold, and about in securities. The result of the investigation of the Committee of Twenty shows that the dealers are short with the Gold Exchange Clearing House about ten millions in gold, which Smith Martin offered to sell them at 135. Oakland Affair. Items from over the Bay are as follows: The track of the Western Pacific is laid from its junction with the Alameda road to a point less than a quarter a mile distant from the creek. To-day rails should be laid to tbe embankment extending in to the creek, to tide-water, when the FacHc Bailroad will be completed from the Atlai lie to the waters of the Pacific. The Com pa ly cannot transport passengers over a road iu own construction as far as the Bay San Francisco, and cannot do so until the impletion of tbe Western Pacific to Oakland. At San Antonio there are large gangs of men at work clearing some of the buildings awaj from the line of tne road, driving piles and leparing timbers for the bridge from Oak) mil to Clinton.

This bridge has been re Dai. for about one-third of its length, and the re seems to be as many men employed tbei 1 as can work to good advantage. Property holders along Third street are someirhatriispleased at the prospect of having the track of the Western Pacific laid through that thoroughfare. The street has been graded and macademized from its eastern extremity as far as Adeline street, at an expense of 30,000, and they regard this money as wasted. The Company can lay a double track, and by the term 1A the franchise the space betweeen the rails and two feet on either aide of the track, which would be the whole crown of the street, must be kept in repair by the Company, and the road itself must be on the official grade of the street.

The latter requirement does not extend to First street Of late, the travel on the creek route seems to be increasing. During the first few weeks the creek boat landed at the Second street dock iu San Francisco hardly a passenger was carried from one place to the other. 7 txw Piaaa Season. The San Bernardino Guardian of the ISih inst, says There will be a full crop of tbis valuable production tbis year. The Indians of this vicinity started out on Tuesday morning tor their pawn-fields in the neighborhood of Bear alley r'rom their profligate habits and general standing, one around snpooee thev were destitute of even the necessaries of life; but on Tuesday we were surprised to see them so well equipped with horses, Provisions, baskets and bows and arrows, 'hey gathered together in squads of ten or twelve at their gaueral rendezvous, in the northern part of the town, whence they all set forth, under their chief, Juan Boca, for the romantic scenery round and about Bear Valley.

They carried with them paper getting forth their purpose, home and length of time they intended being absent from home, so that they can reader a satisfactory account tti themselves, should they be met by scrutinizing parsons. A correspondent of the Stockton Indepen dent gives the following items from Hill's Ferry. Several new buildings bave been built since I was here last, in August.

Among the new buildings, I notice two large frame blacksmith shops, a hnge frame warehouse, 80x100 feet (capable of holding 3,000 tons of wheat) a large lrame livery stable in course of construction, and two dwellings. The Spanish Government says In so many words: "Lay down your arms, send deputation to the Cortes, and if you will be as Canada, we are willing; if you desire independence, we don't say that the matter may not be arranged, but disarm." Spain's motto is nothing but compulsion. The Oakland News ayst Complaint is made from a doaen different sources, of the intolerable impudence with which a female vendor of "notions," pushes her wares under people's noses, and herself up to dinner tables. In one instance, she entered a house on Franklin street passed the lady of the house without apology, and commenced to open trade with guMBi who were in the parlor. She finally sat down, and with the greatest coolness, said ahe believed she would stay all night At a on street she entered the dwelling and took her seat on her own invitation at the lunch-table of a private family.

She dresses well, with much jewelry, refuses to take out a license, and says she knows how to gravel, as she has been at it fourteen years. Her conduct to say the least, is strange, unladylike and intolerable. RESOLUTION OF AWARD KO. Last evening Coroner Letterman held an in quest in the Police Court-room, in the case of Mark Altman, the boy who was murdered on Monday night, at the entrance of the "Crystal Palace Saloon," corner of Jackson and Kearny streets. The following witnesses gave their tes timony Jo eph Vichini Testified tbat he keeps a fruit stand on Jackson street, near the entrance of the cellar; that he was there on lst Monday night, and wag looking across Jacksou street, when he heard a report, that sounded no louder than that of a fire-cracker, apparently down Jackson street, some distance below him; that when he looked around him, he could not see any one on the sidewalk on the same Bide on which he stood.

He saw no flash of a pistol. William W. Davis Testified that on Monday night he was coming up Jackson street from the Post Office, and, while crossing Montgomery, he heard a noise something like the discharge of a fire-cracker, np Jactson street, near Kearny. He went up, and a young man, or rather boy, passed by him, going down. The boy appeared very much excited, and entered the shoe-store.

He heard a young man ak him what was up. when tha boy replied: "A boy has been shot at the corner." Then the other person said: "is he dead?" when the boy put his month close to the other one's er, and whispered something; then he saw him pick up a coat acd walk out. The witness said went np, iV the boy who bd been shot, and theu told an officer what he had seen; and on going to the shoe-store with the officer, they found the place closed. The witness then stated that he spoko to a stranger and asked him if the pa ty who had shot was arrested, to which the strai. ger answered "No; but I could have arrested him if I had known he had shot; I thought it was only a fl e-cracker that had teen thrown; there were two boys, one of whom stooped down, put his hand through the railing surrounding the stairs, and theu they ran away, one up and the other down tne str 1 1.

I had no idea at the time that it was anything but a fire-cracker that the boy had thrown, and did not know until nearly a minute that any one ha been shot. At this stage of the inquest the further hearing of testimony waa postponed until half-ast seven o'clock this evening.
