Jan. 27, 1982 S.F. EXAMINER E15; Dunaway graces a tender play By William RaMy Newhotitt News Senke The Curse of an Aching Heart' has the same leaden gait as this season's other female star vehicles, it does at least yearn to soar. Dunaway's absence from the theater has not dimmed her stage technique. She's usually in cortK mand." EW YORK William Alfred achieves a tender and sonvetlmes poetic sensibility in his new play about life two generations ago among the Irish poor What else we watched locally The 49er Super Bowl victory was the big ratings winner in the Bay Area, of course, with a rating Sunday afternoon of 92.9 and a 91 share As reported Monday, KPDC said that constituted a record Bay Area viewing audience for any program.

By comparison, the top prime-time program last week "60 Minutes," as usual had a rating of 27, a 44 share. "MASH" fared much better here, second place, than it did nationally, 17th. Those of Beverly May, Audrey Neenan and Paul McCrane are outstanding. Despite the charisma of Its star, the production is a fine example of ensemble playing. John Lee Beatty has treated a minor masterpiece of a setting of Brooklyn in the old days, complete with a trolley car that works. Nancy Potts' costumes lyrkally evoke the era. What other critics said: Douglas Watt, Dally News: "Makes for an evening of thin charm.

Alfred has taken such pains to lard the talk with period references that. I began to get the feeling 1 was trapped in a glossary instead of a play. The play, tike the set is too skeletal to satisfy." Frank Rich, New York Times: "If piay. can conjure up a nostalgia iur time and place you never knew, the sounds and smells of a childhood that A 14 niinaiiinn on skates, on ice, and best of all, on stage." Half the nation watched 49ers become No. 1 NEW YORK (AP) A season high audience estimated at 105 million viewers watched the prime-time segment of Super Bowl 1 on CBS, and the network easily won the ratines race for the ninth straight week, figures from the A.C.

Nielsen Co. showed. The audience estimate, from CBS, would make Sunday's game the most watched in the history of the pro-football champioaship. The rating for the portion of the game between San Francisco and Cincinnati that was broadcast in prime time, 7 7:50 p.m in the East, was 50.4. It was an all-time high for the prime-time segment of the game Itself, but still a good measure behind the 53.3 rating for the "Who shot episode of CBS's "Dallas" in the week ending Nov.

23, 1980, The post-game show was No. 2 for the week, with CBS's 1i0 Minutes" third. The rating for the news program, which followed the post game program in the East, was 34.8 the highest ever for the show. The rating for the entire Super Bowl game broadcast, v. hich began at 4 p.m., will not be available until tomorrow.

At least two previous games, including last year's, began later in the afternoon, and consumed as much as two hours of prime time. Nielsen says the prime-time rating for the Super Bowl means of all the nation's homes with television. Just over half saw at least part of the game's conclusion. CBS had all but one of the 10 highest-rated programs in the week ending Jan. 24 the exception was an ABC movie, "Fantasies," in ninth place and registered an average rating for the week of 21.

ABC was second at and NBC last for the third straight week at 15.8. The networks say CBS's rating means in an average prune-time minute during the week, 21 percent of the nation's homes wh TV were tuned to CBS. CBS's "Falcon Crest" was 10th in the ratings, the highest finish for any of the season's new series. "One of the Boys," on NBC, was No. 18.

Three news shows were among the week's five lowest-rated programs. "NBC Magarinc" was No. 68, with an NBC Natalie Wood film to go on of Brooklyn, "The Curst' of an Aching Heart." And Faye Dunaway, for whom the leading role of Frances Walsh was written, is stunning as the heroine. The play, a work of considerable beauty, opened Monday at the Little Theater. Alfred, who first introduced us to his immigrants back In 1965 with "Hogan's Goat" (which also featured Dunawayi, gives us Frances' nostalgic reminiscences from 14-year-old innocence to life-hardened motherhood at 35.

An orphan, Frances moves out on her own as a teen-age office derk after the uncle she loves makes an awkward sexual advance. We meet her suitors and follow her into a disastrous marriage to the best-looking and loudest boaster among them, "Lugs" Walsh, who finally surrenders to the bottle. "The Curse of an Aching Heart," with its echoes of "Our Town" and "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn." Ls a play of almost as many flaws as episodes. But it has a wonderful tenderness. Dunaway's splendid performance to Viennese Ball in California Hall On the eve of Valentine's Day, the romance and pageantry of 19th centu- ry Vienna returns to California Hall, 625 Polk St, when the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra presents Its eighth' annual Viennese Ball.

The $125 million science-fiction thriller will resume filming Feb. 8 as a result of an agreement between MGM and Lloyd's of London, one of two insurance rarrivrs on the film. The awxiation of under-w riters that makes up Lloyd's will finance the final filming of the movie, an MGM spokesman said.

The second insurance carrier, Pacific Indemnity Co, was not involved in the agreement to complete film-mg. After Wood died. MGM tried unsuccessfully to collect almost $15 million on its two policies rather than try to compk-te the movie. Wood was scheduled for just three more days of shooting when she drowned, but director Douglas Trumbull said her key scenes had already been filmed, contrary to reports that major scenes remauied to be completed.
