At the same time, the board told community groups their participation would be encouraged by a series of public hearings to be announced in a few days. TJie Rev. L. II.

Murphy of Metropolitan Unified Ministerial Council said he and others will seek to oust them from office in subsequent elections if the board remains unresponsive to its demands. School board member Lorenzo Hoopes defended the board's position. "It was this very process which brought Marcus Foster to Oakland," said Hoopes. the board has hired five professional educators to screen candidates prior to a final selection. The panel will hold public hearings to receive input from individuals and organizations on the kind of person they would like the superintendent to be and what are the needs of the district.

Transportation Department announced today a $1,172,000 grant to BART to build Oakland's 12th Street station.
