wholesale devastation that the two thugs perpetrate on innocent bystanders, driving their cars like maniacs through street parades, squares, restaurants and even into the bedroom of an old couple watching television. The technical expertise involved in the automobile derring-do is not to be denied. The special effects and the trick photography are superb. Paramount Picmrw Present THE LITTLE PRINCE VALERIE HARPER Chicano policeman's wife But the performances do not approximate the skill of these two gifted actors who totally fail to make their bestial roles charismatic or even moderately appealing. Valerie Harper makes a persuasive screen debut as Arkin's fiery Chicano wife who plausibly lies her way out of his accusations of infidelity.

The film should be very popular with the blood lust set who mindlessly applaud carnage. But those who oppose the whole concept of vigilante morality will not be able to root for these out-Jaws whose messianic zeal makes them repellent personalities. This time. James Caan (as Freebie, always looking for a handout) and Alan Arkin (as Bean, Benito an American of Mexican descent) play the "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Cop" roles of an- intrepid and amoral team who stretch and bend the law for their own purposes. Producer-director Richard Rush apparently lost control of -his project, allowing the two strong actors to design their own characterizations and to indulge themselves excessively in mannerisms that betray the style (already murky) of the film. Moreover, he veers so rapidly from brutal realism to ludicrous hyperbole that the film becomes a teeter-totter of tastelessness and violence on one level and fantasy and Keystone Kops heroics on another. The story has something to do with Caan and Arkin's desire to find evidence against a bigtime gangster (Jack 'Kruschen).

In the course of their pursuit they brutally attack suspects without a shred of piously reading the victims their rights while kicking in their faces. That kind of style constitutes most of the alleged humor, along with Caan's repeated racist slurs on Arkin's Chicano ancestry. The film's most cruel aspects, -however, lie in the Berkeley troupe money-raiser Berkeley Stage Company will hold five benefit performances for the theater on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 28 and 29, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 3, 4 an 5, at Way Station 99, 1111 Addison St.
