UPPER LEVEL ROADWAY -LOOP CLOSURE AT SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. has been changed from January 12. 1973 to January 19, 1973. Jan. 8, 1973-It 2 Plane Crashes -I Killed Drowned in Reservoir By Lon Daniels One man died and two others were seriously injured in separate crashes involving light airplanes yesterday in the Bay Area.

Miguel Fernandez, 25, of Daly Citiy, apparently drowned after he climbed from a Cessna 150 that crashed into chilly Lower Crystal Springs Reservoir in San Mateo County. The pilot, Adam Brody, 22, of Burlingame, was in serious condition today in Peninsula Hospital with head injuries. In a spectacular but unrelated mishap at Hayward Air Terminal, two small private planes collided over a runway, critically injuring 26 year old Robert Mattschei of Union City. Lost Power San Mateo County deputies said the plane that crashed into the reservoir had taken off from San Carlos airport on an instructional flight. The pilot told investigators the aircraft lost power just before it hit the water west of Belmont.

The crash was witnessed by motorists on Highway 280. One of them, Stephen Mordus, 29, of San Francisco, plunged into the 40 degree water to help. He used a log to pull Brody to safety and went back for Fernandez, a student pilot. Fernandez, however, could not be found. Sheriff's Lt.

Paul Hale said the victim apparently could not swim. A sheriff's rescue unit, practicing about three miles away, recovered the body within two hours. A Coast Guard helicopter took Mordus and Brody to Peninsula Hospital where Mordus was treated for exposure and released. The coroner's office said Fernandez was an employe of Western Airlines and lived at 232. Mariposa Drive, Daly City.

Hayward Crash The two planes in the Hay. ward accident were about 300 feet above the runway when they collided. Miraculousy, the pilot of one and his two passengers apparently escaped unharmed. Richard Thomas Mahon. 26, of San Leandro, who was flying a Piper Cherokee with two passengers, told Hayward police he had tower clearance for a final approach on runway 28L and was approaching touchdown when his plane collided with another underneath.

Mahon said he could only speculate the other plane was intending to land on Runway 28R. He managed to make a safe landing with the Piper, which is owned by Career Aviation Academy of Hayward. He and his passengers, identified as Bradley Smith, 23, of Sausalito, and Paul First, about 21, were not hurt. Mattschei's Cessna, owned by Flight Tech Inc. of Hayward, dropped to the runway and was a total loss, according to airport manager James Mummert.

Mattschei, of 2633 Hilton Union City, was reported in critical condition after surgery at St. Rose Hospital Services Held For Rep. Begich ANCHORAGE (Alaska) (UPI) Rep. Nick Begich, the Democratic congressman from Alaska, who vanished on a campaign flight last October, was eulogized yesterday as a promising young man who died too soon.
