'They tried to name me as a major supplier, and it wasn't me. It was George Rogers," Strachan said in a lengthy interview while waiting to testify before the grand jury. "He and (David) Waymer.

They were the ones giving it to the other players. "I'm not saying they were making a profit. They were doing the same thing I was doing," Strachan said. Rogers, Waymer, and defensive end Frank Warren were named as Saints players to whom Strachan supplied cocaine in one of the two charges to which he pleaded guilty Aug. 25.

Strachan said they were given immunity from prosecution to testify against him. Attempts to reach Rogers were unsuccessful. His lawyer Ed Holler was not in his office in South Carolina. Rogers has publicly admitted having used cocaine, but said he was sorry and wouldn't do it again. Waymer and Warren have made no public statements and attempts to contact them today through the New Orleans Saints were unsuccessful.

A spokesman in the US. attorney's office said only the US. attorney himself could comment on the cocaine investigation and he was unavailable for comment Strachan pleaded guilty yesterday to one charge of selling cocaine and one charge of conspiracy in a plea bargaining arrangement in which other charges were dropped. The charges involved an alleged transaction with Chuck Muncie, now with the San Diego Chargers who has twice undergone detoxification. Strachan, free on $50,000 property bond, must surrender and start serving his term in 30 days.

Police guard for Reggie in K.C. KANSAS CITY, Mo. Sixteen uniformed policemen were stationed in right field at Royals Stadium last night to protect California's Reggie Jackson from possible abuse by Kansas City fans during the Angels-Royals game. Jackson was involved in a controversial play last week in California with Royals second baseman Frank White, when he barreled into White on a force play at second which many Royals fans labeled a cheap shot Anger in Kansas City was heightened when White said he refused to accept Jackson's apology. Moreno after $1 million a year PITTSBURGH Omar Moreno, despite suffering through his worst season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, reportedly is seeking a contract worth $1 million a year over the next five years.

Moreno, 30, the Pirates' starting centerfielder, is batting just .241 with only 42 RBI and over 100 strikeouts this season. Moreno's best season was in 1979, when hit 282 and stole 79 bases on the Pirates' world championship team. Moreno said he is less than happy with the way negotiations have gone. S2SMO, purse VMM.
