i ondence, having reference to an eight-hour petition, forwarded from this Bute to Congress, explains itself Sesatb U. 8., May 29, 1868. Dcab OnrEBix That very formidable petition in favor of the eight-hour rule for labor on the publio works has been received, presented in the Senate and to the Committee on Finance, before which Committee the bill is pending. Particular attention will be called to the subject and early action urged I am decidedly in favor of the measure. In this age of steam and machinery, eight hours Is enough for any man to labor.

If each able-bodied person performed his share of the work of the world, much less than eight hours would serv for each one. It would be better that some who labor not at all should take a hand than that more than eight hours labor should be required of any. Yours very truly, C. Colk. Gen.

A. M. WrNv, San Francisco. gknebai. wkth to sxmatob cole.

Mechanics Stats 1 San Francisco, June 18, 1868. Friend Colk: I have your letter of the 29th of May. I am delighted that you are so decidedly in favor of the eight-hour system, and that you will support the bill for a law to make it national in its character. Your opinion so emphatically expressed does credit alike to yonr head and heart, and will thrill with joy thousands of toiling masses that will read it in the newspapers. We see no evasion in your answer.

It is open, manly, plain, easily understood; just what should drop from the pen or ton-roe of every honest man, and more particularly so as aenator or tne united States. Your letter was read to the OounciL Joyous hope lit up every countenance, and a vote of thanks to you was adopted with a hearty good will. in tnis state we nave still to contend with the parsimonious croakers for cheap labor, and more nours oi toil, uneap laoor is tne curse of a nation; it degrades the producer and elevates the consumer; deprives the one of food for the mind and body, and furnishes the other with both, it provides one with pick and shovel and the other with diamonds; it is not equal, it is not just. I am opposed to cheap labor may Heaven defend us against its blighting influence. I am now fifty-eight years of age, but I confidently hope to Bee tne time wnen tnis nation and every Btate of ttus glorious Republic shall by law make eight hours a day's work.

It is a debt due the toiling masses, and they now demand its payment. Like the horse, they have not known their strength they have worked along in harness without understanding the secret of preventing their chains from rubbing off the skin. But now they are fast discovering their power, and will make the world feel the influential blow of their political sledge hammer. Accept our thanks for the warm and active interest you take in our behalf. -our mend, A.

C. Co 17. S. Senator, Washington. Mechanics' Stato'Council.

At meeting of the Mechanics' State Council held at Dashaway Hall, last night, the President not being able to be present, 3. C. Parks, Vice-President, took the Chair. A letter was read from the Hon. Cornelius Cole, United States Senator from this State, wherein he avows himself unequivocally in favor of the passage of the Eight-Hour law, now pending before the Finance Committee of the Senate.

The reading of the letter was received with enthusiastic applause, and a committee appointed to draft resolutions expressive of the sense of the Council regarding the sentiments of the Hon. Senator. The Committee soon introduced the following, which were unanimously adopted. Wbcebeas, It is with pleasure that we have listened to the reading of the letter of the Hon. Cornelius Cole, United States Senator from this State, in which he so boldly and manfully declares himself in favor of the passage of the the Eight-Hour bill, already passed by the House of Representatives of the Congress of the United States and now awaiting action in Committee of the Senate, and recognize in the language therein used, and sentiments therein expressed, the ring of true metal.

Therefore be it Jlcsolved, That, both in our individual and representative character, we do hereby return to Senator Cole our earnest and heartfelt thanks for the stand he has taken, and beg leave to assure him that the services he may render 'u procuring the passage of that law, will be properly appreciated and long remembered, not alone by us, but by generations yet unborn. We learn that several of the cases of sickness reported as small-pox have turned out to be a malignant type of measles. This is not an uncommon error with those who have seen but little of small-pox. We believe that many of those cases of death, from week to week, reported to the Health Office, as due to nothing of the kind.

There is said to be almost a continuous line of wagons on the road from the North coming tliis way. We hear, too, that in several States of the Union there is a strone- fnniine evidenced favorably to emigration from the old homesteads. This is particularly noticed in the South. While we are desirous of nlling up the vast tracts of vacant lands in the county with an enterprising and industrious population, we shall by no means hold out inducements to families residing on the paternal acres to abandon them for a home in this Elysium or El Dorado. To the agricultural laborers, used to work, there can be no more desirable location than this county, and a more comfortable competence awaits them after a few years' active labor on their own holding.

We wre informed this week, by a gentleman who has facilities of knowing whereof he speaks, that in Germany there is a lively interest being awakened on behalf of emigration to California, and especially to the southern Eortion of the State. We want such people ere, and the large ranches which are now being subdivided and prepared for market, will afford them the homes they are in search of. We cannot have too many of this claas of men, who are able-bodied and know bow to work, and are not afraid to do it, either. Sierra.
