Edited by Rolling Stone's chief photographer, Annie Leibovitz, "Shooting Stars" comprises about 125 individual photographs on 160 pages of large (10 by 13 inches), heavy, high-quality paper. The subjects are unsurprising (Dylan, Stones, Beatles, Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Hen-drix, Grace, Janis, Leon, Laura, Bette, Duane, Tina, Sly, Carole King, the Dead, the Airplane), the photographers are the best (Jim Marshall, Baron Wolman, Herb Greene, Ed Caraeff, David Gahr, Bob Seidemann, Nevis Cameron, Barry Feinstein, Ethan Russell and Annie, plus 11 more) and Tony Lane's design is clean and intelligent. The only other comparable book to appear was "The Photography of Rock," which is so vastly inferior on every level to "Shooting Stars" that it is not even fair to call it comparable. For one thing, Ms.

Leibovitz, being an esteemed music photographer herself, was able to get some of the otherwise more preverse and recalcitrant practitioners of the trade to participate where Joe Publisher would have certainly failed. Secondly, and most importantly, is the respect Annie shows both the profession and the individual photographers themselves. "Shooting Stars" is a book obviously edited by a professional, working with professionals. The photographs vary widely, from blatantly posed studio shots to pure candids, but consistent throughout is' that the book takes the pictures seriously. The frosting, and the factor which elevates "Shooting Stars" beyond photographs, no matter how fine, is that each section of work is preceded by a page of commentary by the photographer.

Here they discuss their work, or their pictures, or their technique or their neuroses in a succinct but revelatory manner. These are fascinating documents, for it soon becomes clear that about the only things the 20 men and one woman have in common is that they take pictures. Some consider their secret to lie in post production techniques others in capturing the moment and printing be damned. Some talk about problems are the first ones someone tries to hassle on every level," grumbles Jim Marshall); others are more cavalier pictures is easy, very easy, the easiest, thing I know to do is take photographs," says Barry Feinstein). Bob Seidemann says, among other things: "It was Grace Slick and Janis Joplin competing for the Number One spot in San Francisco.

Jim Marshall says, of the same two ladies: "That they were rivals for the Queen Bee position in San Francisco was a lot of media And so it A iroiBE HHP 0 COW PALACE OCT.5,6,&7 FRI. 3 PM 11 PM SAT. There are those which capture extraordinary juxtapositions Cameron's shot of Mick Jagger in an air terminal), some grab legendary moments (Caraeff's shot of Jimi Hendrix beseeching a burning guitar), some are incongrous (the late Brian Jones bowing a solitary cello), some, but not very many, show a person's life in one still. Marshall's shot of Janis Joplin slouched on a torn-up couch somewhere backstage, twisting the top of a Southern Comfort bottle, 20 years of pain and rejection etched in her face is such a photograph. But mostly they are not, I would say, of endless interest. Unless you have produced "The Family of Man," that is generally true of photography colections. They go on the coffee table, not because they are trivial but because they are as much for sharing as for absorbing.

But the words can be read and re-read, for they are about individuals and creators and drive and ambition and the pursuit of art, whatever that may be. A picture can, indeed, be worth a thousand words. But it usually isn't. 1973 Mrd. laMt-u Mlil Tim.
