Broadway is mourning Zero Mostel, His death last Thursday of a massive heart attack at fi2 in a Philadelphia hospital was so sudden and unexpected that his uife, Kate, and sons Tobias and Josh weren't there. He had actually been on the verge of leaving the hospital, with his friend, actor Sam I.cwne. thinking he was recovered from a minor virus, when he had the attack. Just three weeks ago Mrs. Mostel told me he'd lost f0 pounds on a "no food diet" pills he took five times a day by doctor's prescription.

His son, Tobias, said he had "been yelling, tummeling, kvetching" as usual the day before he died. They didn't always believe Zero when he said, "Oy vay, am 1 tired, does my back hurt, is my throat sore!" Zero earned as much as a week in the revival of "Fiddler on the Roof." but he reminded us he had "partners" the government. He inserted his personal "ZeroiMiis" into all his shows. Directors, ami sometimes Kate, made him delete some of them. Paul Upson, who played the role of Tevye for him 2fi times during illnesses, said Zero was generous with laughs and helped him get a funny exit for his own role as a butcher." "One Zeroism was Tevye getting caught in his nightgown during a nightmare scene and not being able to get untangled.

People screamed at that across the world and it was Zero's," said Lipson. Zero sometimes brought not a doctor's excuse, but his doctor or voice coach to prove he had lary ngitis. To miss a matinee and night performance would get him docked about He got along well with producer Alexander II. Cohen, though once protesting the size of his billing in "Ulysses in Nightgown." Zero thought his billing was too big. He had a tender side that came out when he went to see his son, Joshua, in a play in which his character was killed.

"I cried," Zero said. "I covered my eyes so that everybody wouldn't see me cry. When I took my hand away, everybody else was crying, too." "Is your son, Tobias, a better painter than you?" I classic. An actor who looks like Jimmy Carter and an actress who looks like Queen Elizabeth alight from an enormous limousine. What happens next you'll have to see for yourself.

Foxx is surprisingly good in the skits. He always plays Redd Foxx, of course, but he's very funny doing it. The humor is extremely off-color, but the writers get away with it. How they managed to tell you the way Yuma, got its name without squeals from the censor is beyond me. Foxx handles the variety segment of the show in an original manner.

He walks up to the camera, tells the audience that this is the portion of a comedy show where the production number usually comes in, and then introduces his lovely, leggy dancers. Zappy music starts, he begins to dance, but then about 45 seconds into it, he stops, says, "Later, girls" and announces a substitute for the production number a commercial. The humor and most of the performers are black, the only whites being, as usual, sad sack, uptight, laughable. Whether this convention is adhered to for the sake of a black audience or to let hites laugh at themselves in the safety of their homes is a good question. No matter what the answer is, "The Redd Foxx Show" is an excellent hour of sometimes hilarious comedy.

CHIPS All the advance publicity for "CHiPs" (8 p.m., Channel 4 made the show look like "Adam-fl," the same idea as "Adam-12" but with two wheels instead of four. The 11 and in the title stand for California Highway Patrol, and the show is about two motorcycle CHPers in, here else, Los Angeles. "Adam-12," "Emergency!" and other picaresque, plotless programs have been dubhed "training shows" because they are intended, supposedly, to train youngsters in the fine points of watching TV. Plot, one assumes, can be added later, when the youngsters grow up a little. "CHiPs" is a lot better than your average training program because it can make fun of itself and offers, at least in tonight's opener, a sustained plot around which the various incidents are arranged.

The two motoreyle patrolmen (Larry Wilcox and Erik Estrada) are legal motoreyle gangsters. They illustrate how not to ride a motoreyle weaving in and out of traffic, passing between vehicles who are already packed lane-to-lane on the freeway. A large portion of the show is taken up with extended car-motorcyle chases, making "CHiPs" sort of a reduction to-essence of many cop shows: All car chase, little else. "CHiPs" is better written, directed and acted than we have any right to expect for a show with modest pretensions. While it's not for those who like "Upstairs, Dow nstairs," it's a better-thanaverage cop training program and it's light on violence.
