But black fathers and black husbands have been singularly neglected. Florida and James are black.

A neutral series title was needed. After somebody enthused, "If we get a comedy about a black family on television, it will be a great day," the series was first listed on the CBS-TV schedule as "Great Day." Somebody else observed that since the locale was a poverty-plagued Chicago ghetto, maybe the adjective "great" was a trifle extravagant. "Good Days" was accepted and then rejected due to conflict of identity with ABC-TV's new "Happy Days" series. Ergo: The new series premieres tonight at 8:30 as "Good Times" on Channel 7. IL-.

h.4Q shw' liiilU Though Sanford and Maude have their names in the titles of their series. Florida's case is different. Florida has a husband, James, and nobody from Lear and Yorkin down wants the husband to be overwhelmed overshadowed. It's O.K. for Walter to be overshadowed by Maude because Walter is white.

White fathers and white husbands have had their glory in the "Lotsa, Luck" and "The $6 Brooks, Rich Little, Telly Savalas, Charlie Callas, Capt. Eugene Cer-nan (90 min.) Save for "Barefoot in the Park," which quickly blew high, wide and then some, this' is our first situation comedy look inside a complete black family. Unlike Julia, Florida has a husband.

Unlike Sanford, James has a wife. There are three kids in the ghetto household. The oldest, James played by Jimmie Walker, is a weird, witty, gawky, put-on artist, a teen-age character actor, and funny. Esther Rolle as Florida comes on like a Pearl Bailey encore, big and strong and determined her man is gonna make good. She keeps kissing him and hugging him and cheering him on: "You always see the family through.

You can do it." John Amos as James is good and able to handle rebuffs, and he gets them. Florida and James josh around a lot. Florida: "Give me one good reason why you married me." James: "You was pregnant." They are startled to see daughter Thelma is listening. Thelma: "Wouldn't bother me none. I ain't the oldest." Florida.
