i A simple approach to business Waldorf gave U2 a rousing ovation. Singer Bono, who tends to give short entr'acte speeches, needn't nave asked for some "audience energy" it was already out there, as was the perspiration that comes from it Next time around U2 will probably play a big theater; they win have become a "success." Then we'll be able to see them them; we'll be seated, not jostled around a dance floor. And then U2 will probably have lost its informal, S.F. EXAMINER E9 Mon. Mar.

23. 1981 youthful fun. Tm glad I (almost) saw them in the "good old days," a few nights back. Bay Area Movies I if 1 The Irish Bono, The Edge, Mullen and Clayton By Philip Elwood It was so crowded at the Old Waldorf a couple of nights ago that for once I was pleased that the sound system was on high-gain and aimed right at my eardrums otherwise I might not have been sure that the young Irish new-wave rockers called U2 were even on stage. U2, with considerable advance ery and their first LP, called "Boy," moving fast up the charts, is a very hot act and one drawing furrow-browed and pretentious critiques from the heavies in the rock press.

1 must say I enjoyed the music the other night, although I dont think U2 is exactly in the category of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who or the Budapest Quartet quite yet Probably the most pleasing aspect of U2's performance, and of the group itself, is their rather simple (if not naive) approach to their business. They're a rather ordinary foursome visually although bassist Adam Clayton was wearing a curly-haired white wig, and U2 also is quite simple in its musical structure. You've heard older musicians criticizing basic rock groups because of their harmonic plainness? "Three chord rock" was the most common term of derision. Well, U2, I think, is a twochord band, and the chords seem to be spaced In fifths (not the usual thirds). This creates a sort of bagpipe drone effect which bassist Clayton maintains (augmented by guitarist "Edge" Evans' ensemble efforts) throughout their short, 40 minutes, set.

Edge plays an awful lot of and Bono sings (shouts, mum a good deal of the time, too. tunes are long by new-wave averaging about four U2 likes to create an audio with the drone-effect and extended solos, and Bono's Drummer Larry Mullen keeps the punkers' rat-ta-tat metronomic machine gun beat going and singer Bono "Vox" Hewson leaps and prances all over the state. When Bono (that's his official stage name) got up onto the drunwet level, indeed, I could actually see half of U2, sort of Ul. Bassist Clayton and guitarist The Edge (again, his official moniker) held their ground on stage, leaning forward, rocking back, aiming their guitars like soldiers in basic bayonet drill. Drummer Mullen, working especially close with bassist Clayton, creates some pretty nifty stop-time sequences; in fact rhythmically, from what I could hear (and from the LP), Td say Mullen has listened more than a little to jazz drummers his inclination, when given the opportunity, is to alter (even the beat lyric lines.

darkened day' lost my night and day; can't find my Pretty heavy stuff, eh? though simple, though monotonous, though routinized, U2 does a bit of folkish fun. Maybe they have a certain sense of maybe because they're just too become rock superstars. Bono will be 21 this year, The The guitar, minutes.
