Like his colleague J.Y, Shaw engages in some pretty hopeless skittering about, which tends to detract from the otherwise rather smooth musical format On one number, "Why Me?" a solo tenor sax and four other traditional instruments played along, vanishing as quickly as they had appeared. The staging, for a top-flight group used to selling out arenas, was tacky a few puffs of smoke, some flashing lights ton "Lights," of course) and a few rear-stage projections.

Their current LP, "Cornerstone," and the single from "Babe," have been unexpectedly strong sellers since mid-autumn both long since "gold." Nol many ago, even vvith four LPs Issued. Styx was still playing college and high-school dates around the Midwest; In fact, their Canadian following was larger than that in the United States.

Their first San Francisco appear ance. at Wtnterland, came in 1976 a remarkable five years after their first LP. Styx has bits' and pieces of many rock sounds occasional thunderous keyboard noises; drum specialties; references to "classical" music; a steady, Indeed monotonous, thumping beat on most numbers, that frequently takes on an almost martial air. Although De Young can hit hard with his high, floating tenor, his is not a strong voice yet it's the quintet's best He seems an excellent acoustic pianist, and knows how to turn on a crowd by turning up his electronic keyboard effects. In fact, the Styx personnel bob and weave about the stage but seldom establish strong personal images. The tall, blond James (J.Y.) Young and the spry, equally blond Tommy Shaw are a peculiar visual combination but little is made of that; bassist Chuck Panozzo hides behind his dark glasses in the stage shadows much of the time and his twin brother.
