Page 7 Oct. 15, 1978 By Don Lattin Examiner Staff Writer PALM SPRINGS Omnipresent air conditioners protect them from the heat. Stone walls and towering palm trees protect them from each other. Pressure mats, motion detectors, security guards and Bi-Spy beams are supposed to protect them from crime. They are the movie stars, business executives and retired millionaires of Las Palmas Estates.

And they have just come to the frightenMing realization, that they, too, are vulnerable. Disbelief over the mysterious triple slaying of former San Franeisco race track entrepreneur Edward Friendly, 74, his wife, Sophia, 71. and their 67-year old maid Frances Williams, continues to grip this exclusive Palm Springs neighborhood. Neighborhood residents who have never met venture from their homes and backyard pools for unprecedented conservations on their sizzling asphalt streets. They ask reporters if there are Indications of underworld ties, while police call such queries "runaway All police admit knowing after two days of round-the-clock investigation is that there were no signs of forced entry and many valuable items were left behind.

Papers were thrown around a room in what one investigator said "may just be a cover-up." The same thing happened a few months ago, when the Friendlys were on a four-month vacation. No suspects or motive have been uncovered. Investigators have ruled out suicide, but won't say if they've found the murder weapon. A coroner's report found that a' figh-caliber pistol was placed against the skulls of Williams and Friendly. He was also shot in the heart.

The gun was estimated to be about one foot from Mrs. Friendly's head when fired. The report listed the cause of death for the two women as "gunshot injuries of the brain." Friendly died of "gunshot injuries of the There were no signs that any of the three victims were otherwise physically abused. Time of death was sometime between 6:30 p.m. Thursday and, 7:30 a.m.

Friday. As he does three mornings a week, Leo Mannebach entered Edward Friendly's carport early Friday morning and walked toward a door leading to the swimming pool. It seemed like a typical morning in Las Palmas Estates. The early morning sun cast a red-tinge on the San Jacinto Mountains towering above the four-bedroom Mediterranean-style home as Mannebach began cleaning the pool for Friendly, who likes an early morning swim. Something was bothering Mannebach as he began working, but he wasn't sure what it was.

Thinking trick, he realized he had spotted out of the corner of his eye, a human form lying on the kitchen floor. He wondered why someone would be sleeping on the floor, especially in a household of early risers. The Days 3 Springs shot to Desert in PS Sun Om he. Examiner Bengiveno Palm Springs police Lt. M.J.

Smith, who is dealing with the killings Walking back into the carport, Mannebach looked through the window of a door leading into the kitchen. "My mind was in a state of shock," he said in an interview yesterday, recalling when he saw the maid in her white uniform, lying in a pool of blood. Mannebach rang the front door bell, but no one answered. He tried a neighbor's door and got the same response. While walking down the deserted street in search of a telephone, he flagged down Officer Art Francis, who was patrolling the neighborhood.

Francis, with the aid of other officers he called, broke into the Friendly home a and discovered the first triple homicide in Palm Springs history. At 7:30 a.m., the temperature had already reached 80 degrees. By midmorning, a dozen local cops, county coroner's staff members and crime specialists with the U.S. Department of Justice's regional crime lab from Riverside had arrived. Five television camera crews and a small army of journalists roamed the neighborhood, unable to find anyone who heard any shots.

Inside, the bodies of Williams, in the kitchen, Friendly, in the bedroom, and Mrs. Friendly, in the hall, were lying in pools of blood. The home, decorated with antique furniture, was in a "minor stage of disarray." Papers were strewn, drawers open and a coat rack overturned. Places were set at the dining room table. Several pieces of fish were burned to a crisp in an oven turned down to a low heat.

It was approaching noon and 100 degrees. Amazed neighbors saw all this activity at 893 Camino Del Sur and wondered what was going on. Close cops said things like "routine investigation" or "looks like a Later, when they learned what happened, The reaction was amazed fascination, similar to what one gets while watching "Police Story." "It's a strange kind of neighborhood," said Betty Cota, who lives several doors down. "I don't even know the name of my next door neighbor. Almost everyone here doesn't live here all the time.

This place is like a cemetery in August. You could shoot a cannonball down the street and nobody'd notice." She lives here on weekends with her husband, Dan, an executive with Xerox Corporation in Los Angeles, and their 8-year-old daughter. Another neighbor, whose house is tagged with "Security by Westinghouse" signs, didn't want his name in the paper. His father was afraid "that nut will get us next. "We've been here a year.

We wave to people but its hard to get friendly," he said, unaware of the gruesome pun because he didn't know his neighbors' names. "People here are pretty reclusive." "We were stunned that it could happen around here," said an 11- year resident who lives across the street from Trini Lopez. "Was there Victims' relatives are stunned Relatives of Edward Friendly, one of the victims in the triple slaying in Palm Springs, were at a loss to explain what might have lead up to the killings. Friendly's brother, Alfred, a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and former managing editor of the Washington, Post, was expected to arrive today in Palm Springs. In a telephone interview, his wife expressed shock at the apparently senseless killings.

"We are completely in the dark," she said. Edward Friendly, she said, had been doing "almost nothing" since he retired several years ago as a successful real estate and investent broker here. He also had been a general manager of the old Tanforan race track in San Bruno and was part of a group of Eastern financiers who bought the track in 1959 for $5 million. The track later burned but the organization now runs two other Bay Area tracks, Golden Gate Fields and Bay Meadows. A nephew of the dead man is Jonathan Friendly, a news executive with the New York Times.

Rescuers searched unsuccessfully for the unidentified man for one hour after the 8:45 p.m. incident. Redwood City Cab driver Rich Recker told bridge authorities that he was driving across the span when "the guy opened the door and jumped." Final Teamster nix on pact The last of eight Northern California Teamster locals on strike against four big supermarket chains has voted unanimously to reject a tentative settlement, putting the coup de grace to current hopes of ending the 13-week-old dispute. Local 315 warehousemen voted 475-0 against the proposed agreement yesterday.

Later in the day, drivers and platform workers from the same local voted 411-0 against the pact. Friendly and then her husband. "It was a very busy day," said Deputy Coroner Pat Choate. "We worked from 7:30 that morning to well past midnight." As Friday turned to Saturday, it was still what San Franciscans call "warm." It didn't reach the low of 60 degrees until a few hours before sunrise. MALLOY, Eunice In this city, Oct.
