FORSTER WAS in New York preparing to do a play, "The Edge," that was stalled in production when the "Banyon" offer came. Up until then, he had performed in some pretty good and idealistic plays and two movies. "We looked into the TV deal with 'Banyon' and decided it would be meaningful to me at this time," he said. "Now that I'm in it, it is my desire to beat television, to win at this business. If I am not successful they will get rid of me in 15 weeks." Did Warner Bros, consider hiring a bigger star? "I understand they did.

In TV, I guess, you pay your dollar and take your chance. The proof now is in what we do. The two-hour 'Banyon' pilot last March was seen by more people than all those combined who watched my previous plays and films. Now, th'at Is exciting, mind-boggling, scary." "There were faults," conceded Forster, "but the concept has been changed. This time we are not parodying the '30s.

Banyon is a full-blown character. In the pilot, we played at being a '30s person, now Banyon is becoming a '30s person." Miss Blondell in "Banyon" operates a secretarial agency; Richard Jaeckel plays a cop with a chip on his shoulder for Banyon.
