San Francisco Examiner Wife says suspect in sex slave case killed Chico woman name Is being withheld, allegedly es Examiner news services RED BLUFF Police here and in Chico said today they are investigating whether a 31-year-old mill-worker charged with kidnapping a woman and holding her seven years as a sex slave was involved in the 1976 disappearance of a Chico woman. "We are conducting an investigation to ascertain if (Cameron) Hooker had any involvement in the disappearance of Mary Elizabeth Spann-hake." the Red Bluff Police Department said in a statement Chico police said that Hooker was named by his wife, Janice, 26, as the kidnapper and killer of Spannhake, who was 18 when she disappeared on Jan. 81, 1976, from a street in Chico, 36 miles south of Red Bluff. Janice Hooker has given Red Bluff police a detailed account of Spann-hake's abduction, murder and burial, said Chico Police Chief U.F. Bullerjahn said.

Bullcrjahn said police have no information to corroborate the story, but said the investigation Is continuing. According to Bullerjahn, Hooker told Red Bluff police she and her husband had come to Chico to do some shopping when they picked up Spannhake, who was hitchhiking. Police said the couple subdued Spannhake and drove her to their home in Red Bluff. Janice Hooker told police that once inside the house, Spannhake was suspended by ropes hanging from hooks in the ceiling in a manner similar to the way Red Bluff police have said the alleged sex slave was held. Hooker said her husband tortured Spannhake, even though she begged to be released and swore never to tell about the abduction.
