E14 S.F. EXAMINER Aug. 8, 1980 TV people Pay-per-view TV taking over mm Mill TO ll ftp Sugar Ray Leonard fight was shown to pay TV subscribers in southern California and Columbus. The fee was 8I0 per subscrilier. The revenue was nearly $2 million, or alxwt half what the commercial networks could have realistically paid for the rights.

(The fight was also closed-circuited to about 300 arenas, which put it way out of free TV's reach.) Imagine how much money such an event will draw from pay-per-view TV once such service is available in even a few additional major cities. Free TV won't stand a chance. Two ABC executives network president Jim Duffy and TV division president Fred Pierce are already sounding the alarm. "I believe that this fight sienals the start on the have and have not era in this country. Duffy said at a press conference not long ago.

"I believe the loser Ls going to be the American viewers," Price added. Don Ohlmeyer, executive producer of NBC Sports, says pay-per-view won't leave free TV with much more than two kinds of sports: (1) "sacred" events such as the World Series, that the public and its Congress won't allow to be sold off, and (2) whatever sporting events the networks can stage on their own. THE PROBLEM IS that pay TV costs money that many people can't afford to pay. A $10 admission charge is a couple of hours work, before taxes, for plenty of people. Are these people to be left with little more than trash sports? And if pay TV can grab off sports, what other types of free TV programming might it someday gobble up? ls this trend in the public interest? I'm not eager to see this country's system of free television gutted of its best progranuning by competitors in business to serve only the affluent.

People who can afford to pay to watch the Duran Leonard fight on TV can afford to go to a movie or a ballgame. The poor, the old, and the sick aren't so fortunate. They have little in the way of entertainment other than what comes across their television screens free. Somehow, I don't think the country is ready to supply these people with "television stamps." Ordinary citizens should take a long lmk at pay TV before it becomes too deeply entrenched to uproot. So should their congressmen.

Leaving 'Prairie' for a roadhouse By Charles Witbeik HOLLYWOOD She's prissy, thin-lipped, sharp-nosed, disapproving sister Fran on "Flo." Over on "Little House on the Prairie," Lucy Lee Flippin plays the vulnerable, shy school teacher, Eliza Jane Wilder. As lack would have it, CBS places Polly Holliday's well made and funny "Flo" a spring ratings winner that began reruns last month and with new episodes (if the strike ends in time) will be on Monday nights this fall opposite "Little House on the Praire." That spells curtains for the former "Holiday on Ice" skater Lucy Lee on "Little House." And Michael Landon has written a lovely goodbye script for Lucy Lee's Eliza Jane as she watches brother Almanzo Wilder marry Laura Ingalls (Melissa Gilbert) in a two-parter for the seventh season opener. Landon gives schoolteacher Eliza Jane a love affair that turns out badly, causing the lady to leave town. Thus Michael leaves the door open for Eliza Jane case the competing "Flo" flounders. But such a prospect is not likely.

"Flo" made its debut following "M'A'Snr in lute March, and promptly assumed the number one sKt in the Nielsen ratings. Fans of Polly Holliday's "kiss my grits" waitress on "Alice" were eager to see Flo on her own. They were treated to a well-oiled, warm and amusing introductory' show as the waitress returned home to Texas and eot talked into acquiring the Yellow Rose, a run-down roadhouse. Playing opiiosite herself in early September is embarrassing for Lucy Lee, because of the former road house owner) runs for local office I'll be a campaign worker and a spy." Free of fiance Wendell, Fran should be surveying other possibilities at the Yellow Rose, but who would he good enough? Certainly not uncouth, chauvinistic bartender Earl (Geoffrey Lewis) who stands for everything Fran abhors. Only Les (Stephen Keep) the mysterious and literate piano player, a modern Hoagy Carmichael, qualifies.

Love could sweeten up Fran, but It won't be before Christmas. At 5 feet 10 inches, with fine long legs, Lucy Lee gave up her professional ice skating career on tour in Mexico, because she was tired of just smiling and skating. Her knowledge of Texas, consists of a night In El Paso after crossing the border, bn her way to Hollywood for an acting career. Only two agents would talk to Lucy Lee. One said, "Get married," the other.

"Go back to New York." Taking the latter's advice, the youngster studied with Uta Hagen. made a living off commercials, performed off-Broadway and returned to -Hollywood for "Annie Hall," Jack Nicholson's "Goin' South" and TV guest shots. It's been a 13-year haul as an actress, but Lucy Lee's Pennsylvania family believe she has been been sailing along. Incidentally, Lucy Lee's talented legs are a Flippin trademark. Her late father Harry Flippin used to compete in the Pentathlon, and brother Bill was an IC4A high hurdles champ at Yale.

"Flo's" TV family is quite the opposite, a study in contrast. Sudie Bond's Mama is a tiny thing, passing under Flo's arm. And then there's Frank, looking down on them all. with displeasure. By Ron Alriridc Cliicajio Tribune ONE OF THE best things about network television is that it's free.

There's no direct' charge for "Laverne Shirley" or "Live from Studio 8H." As a result, we probably watch too much junk but we also get occasional feasts. Among the tastiest are major sporting events, which television covers better than it covers anything. Few pleasures exceed the joy and excitement a sports fan feels when he's sitting in a snug living room, beer in one hand, sandwich in the other, watching the Olympics or the World Series or the Super Bowl or the Kentucky Derby on TV. In some ways, watching on TV is better than being there. No rain, no snow, no traffic jams.

Better yet, no admission charge. Through TV, the bunker and the student get the same seats, which are always the best network megabucks can buy. There's no limit on number. Everyone who can find a TV set to watch is admitted free of charge without regard to race, sex, national origin, or social connections. It's one of the democratic wonders of our free enterprise system.

Enjoy it while you can. Like too many of life's pleasantries, this one is on the way out. Many ranking network executives are already Conceding it. Unless Congress steps in, it won't be long before many, perhaps most, major sporting events are distributed not through free television channels but through "pay-per-view" television, a new form of video that provides programs only to people who pay for them. Pay-per-view TV, distributed either by cable or through scrambled ovor-the-air signals, is about to explode through the marketplace.

Now available, for the most part, only in southern California. Detroit, and Columbus, Ohio, it is scheduled to spread soon to Houston. Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Chicago. According to conservative estimates, the technology should penetrate 25 percent of the nation's homes by WHO. Iing before then, it'll be plenty big enough to snare many of the sporting events we now see on free TV.

The first shot in this television revolution was fired last month when the Roberto Duran- jl Lucy Lee Flippin her legs a family trademark character contrasts. "Prairie" fans would not be pleased with Flo's sister Fran, a cartoon character who detests outgoing, chatty, three-times married Flo. Sister Fran is clearly the heavy in the new road -house comedy. Whatever Flo does. Fran is bound to disapprove.

And that bothers leggy, redheaded Lucy Lee, who hopes to soften the character a little. "Fran is too negative." says Lucy Lee, 'too rigid." But whether the former ice skater can convince Pollv Hollidav and the WTiters is yet to be seen. For contrast is needed for Ho, and Lucy Lee is the patsy. Asked to explain how sisters Flo and Fran can turn out to be diametrical opposites, Lucy Lee gives a succinct answer: "Genes. Flo is seven years older.

And Fran simply doesn't approve of her lifestyle." Will Fran loosen up under the influence of raucous life at the Yellow Rose? "1 believe I become dis-engaged from Wendell (another prudish typei," Lucy Lee replies.
