EXAMINER ft Feb. 18, 1983 Deputy pleads guilty in escape of Hells Angel By Tom Hall Examiner staff writer A former San Francisco deputy sheriff pleaded guilty today to conspiring to aid In the March 1981 Jail escape of Hells Angel lieutenant turned government-informer Sergey Walton.

Iuis Ivankovich's negotiated plea came as the federal government agreed to drop a second charge of actually aiding the escajie and a sujerscding grand Jury indictment charging that he also helped Walton leave the seventh floor county jail in the Hall of Justice for 24 hours a week before the escape. The government, according to reliable sources, wanted to settle the Ivankovich case without going to trial so Walton would not be "wasted" in a relatively minor trial. Government prosecutors hope he can become their star witness in cases involving at least two Southern California murders and a car-bombing of a Solano County sheriff's deputy. Those events are connected to the Hells Angels, authorities believe, S. District Judge William Orrick set April 7 for sentencing Ivankovich, who could face five years tn prison and a $10,000 fine.

His case was to have gone to trial Tuesday. Ivankovich. 38, who lives In Concord and now operates an Oakland liquor store, was fired by Sheriff Mike Hennessey after his role in Walton's escape was learned. He is free pending sentence. Walton earlier this month pleaded guilty to the escape and firearms charges and Is to be sentenced next Thursday.

He faces 15 years in prison and a $15,000 fine. At the time of his escape three years ago, Walton was serving an eight-year senence for Illegal weapons possession. A top aide to Hells Angel president Ralph "Sonny" Barger, Walton was awaiting transfer to a federal prison in Texas at the time of his March 23, 1981, escape. The government said Ivankovich, a 1year veteran of the sheriff's department, helped hide Walton in a laundry cart and provided a change of clothes from his orange Jail jumpsuit. He then pushed the cart to a freight elevator, took Walton to the second floor of the Hall of Justice where the Hells Angel walked to a public elevator and left the building.

In the first escape, on St Patrick's Day, Walton returned 24 hours later, using the same escape route in reverse, authorities said. It was also speculated that he intended to return the second time but instead stayed outside after his absence was finally discovered three days after his departure. It hasnt been revealed what Walton did on either of his sojourns outside the Jail. He was recaptured two months after the second escape in a rented cabin in the Santa Cruz mountains. Walton, who was drummed out of the motorcycle gang late last year, according to Barger, Is now cooperating with government prosecutors in building cases against his former colleagues.

Walton, who told OrricK in a court appearance two weeks ago that he wanted "to straighten my life out," is in the federal witness proteciton program and his whereabouts are unknown except to federal authorities. it JL6 4J 1 OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE.
