Navy 3. I I Lutz by the same score to cut LA's lead from 12-2 to 18-14. Phoenix handled Indiana 32-23 on the strength of victories in four of the five sets, and Boston thumped hapless San Diego, 24-21. The Gaters then took a 4-1 lead in the mixed doubles to cut it to 19-18, and led 3-1 in the sixth game of the set. However, McMillan netted a volley and Miss Stove missed the next two points to give the Strings' pair of Kathy Harter and Case the game, and they clinched the match shortly thereafter.

The loss dropped the Gaters to 11-6, with five of the six losses coming on the road, while Phoenix, at 10-8, is a game and a half back, and the Strings are two back at 9-8. In the other three games in Los Angeles last Pittsburgh, one of the powers in the WTT East, marched past Cleveland, 29-25, in a match that saw Cleveland's men's doubles team of Clark Graebner and Marty Riessen offer to fight one of their own fans during their 6-3 loss to Pittsburgh's twosome of Mark Cox and Vitas Gerulaitis. The Golden Gaters returned to the friendly confines of the Oakland Coliseum tonight to face the Los Angeles String in a 7:30 start and not a serve-and-volley too soon for the beleaguered World Team Tennis Western Division leaders. The Gaters left Los Angeles last night after losing their third game in as many days, 25-20, to the Strings, and saw their once-hefty four-and-one-half game lead trimmed to two games. The Gaters rest until next Tuesday, and after having played seven games in eight nights, the layoff is a much-needed one.

The Gaters fell behind early, as Strings player-coach Rosie Casals teamed with Betty Ann Stuart to drub liana Kloss and Ann Klyomura, 6-1, in women's doubles, and then Miss Casals came back to whip Betty Stove 6-1 in women's singles, putting the Gaters behind 12-2 in a hole. But the Gater men charged back to put the match within reach again, with Tom Okker and Frew McMillan drilling the Strings' Ross Case and Geoff Masters in men's doubles, 6-3, and Okker blitzing Bob Raiders acquire Saints lineman The Oakland Raiders have obtained center-offensive tackle John Mooring from the New Orleans Saints for an undisclosed draft choice. L-Boone 12-1 Ills 2008 SS 3 0 0 0 0000 crushes Connors CHICHESTER. Enelan Jimmy Connors crashes to a sensational straight sett defeat against South African Bertie Mitton In the semifinals of the Rothmans Lawt Tennis Championships al Chichester. The Wimbledon and U.S. champion was beaten, 7-6, 6-1, his first defeat for six months. "I planned to slice to his backhand, and It worked," the 22-year-old bearded South African said later.

Connors, who has already won $923,000 this year, is short of grass court practice and struggled to Judge the pace of the ball. Connors had not been beaten since Jan. 1 and lost only four matches out of 103 last year. Argentinian victor, not at peak, yet PARIS The going has been easy for Argentina's Guillermo Vilas in the French Open tennis championships so far and he says he is not yet in top form. "I was hitting well, although not really what I would call 100 hundred per cent," the 22-year-old lefthander said after trouncing Juan Muntanola of Spain 6-1, 6-3 in the second round of play on the clay courts of Roland Garros Stadium here.

The Argentinian had another test today against his compatriot Ricardo Cano, a player who gained the third round by beating America's Armistead Neely 6-4, 6-3. "It's very difficult playing against such a good player," Muntanola said after his defeat. "I reckon he is the best around at the moment. Vilas stopped playing for about a month, so he was not really in top form. He led by a few easy shots." Even so, the Argentinian has looked among the toughest in a line-up that includes Bjorn Borg of Sweden, last year's champion; Hie Nastase of Romania; Raul Ramirez of Mexico, Stan Smith of the United States and John Alexander of Australia all contending for the $30,000 first-place prize money.

Vilas so far has had the only love match in the tournament, blanking West Germany's Hans Hoachim Plotz 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. He has shown a rifle-shot serve and has thoroughly dominated his matches. Borg and Ramirez have also ruled in their matches. The Swede celebrated his 19th birthday Friday with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Peter Szoke of Hungary. Ramirez was tested in his first set with a scrappy English bank clerk named Martin Robinson, winning it 7-6 in a tiebreaker.

Tonight they can show it wasn't an accident by staging a similar demonstration against the Aztecs in Los Angeles. Paul Child, 1974 NASL scoring champion who had' scored only twice in eight games, kicked a pair of goals late in the second half, the second coming with less than two minutes left. Derek Craig, Borris Bandov and Ilija Mitic also scored. The nine points (six for the victory, one for each of the first three goals) boosted the Quakes from fifth Cast) to third in the NASL with 39 points, four more than the idle Aztecs. Portland is last at 33.

Randy Horton, who commutes from Bermuda for Washington Diplomats' games, put on a Frank Mer-riwell show last night.
