6, 1979 S.F. EXAMINER Page 23 TV people Bill Mandel a ft i -s 0 Rolling Stones perform 'Jumping Jack Flash' on 'Heroes of Rock Roll Friday night V1IF and UHF stations, millions of TV viewers don't rare to bother with the extra fiddling needed tune In IUIF stations. Moreover, although Channel (10 Is carried on many local cable systems that eliminate the need to search the UI1F band for stations, the cable, "penetration" in the Bay Area is currently at a relatively low 17 percent. Most Bay Area TV viewers still get their TV signals through the air. What Is Channel 14 getting in Its move to the slightly harder-to-flnd Channel fiO slot? Mueho, Most importantly, KCSM (the educational station) will be broadcast on a signal strong enough to be received through the air in the nine Bay Area metropolitan counties.

KCSM (which is Channel 14) can now he seen In central San Mateo County only. In addition, when It moves to Channel 60, KCSM will be broadcasting In color, upgraded from black-and-white poverty. When KDTV moved out of Its old studios It left the College of San Mateo station more than In studio and traasmittlng equipment. KCSM turned around and used the value of that equipment to apply for a matching grant from the VS. Office of Education.

The station learned last month that a present is on the way, meaning that KCSM upgraded itself to the tune of without spending taxpayer money. In addition to regular Public Broadcasting Service d'USi programs (w hich sometimes duplicate Channel 9's offerings but at different times), the new Channel HO will provide expanded coverage of San Mateo County and Bay Area public Issues using Its newly-acquired facilities and equipment. The station Is also packaging 14 college-credit courses over its air. Sample course topics are "Personal Money Management" "Interior Design," "Parent-Child Relationships," "Consumer Real Estate" and "Keep It Running," about fixing one's car. Viewers can receive college credit for taking these courses at home by registering with the College of San Mateo (phone: 415 574jfi0i.

One side-ripple of the Channrt 14Channel 60 switch Is the placement of the new stations on existing cable systems. If someday soon you think Channel 60s Spanish programs have somehow been usurped by Mr. Rogers, or that "Sesame Street" has become a melodramatic Spanish soap opera, call your local cable system and find out where each new station can lie found on your cable dial. The exact dale for the swiich Is unclear, pending final FCC approval, expected in a few davs. Rock 'iV roll's finest moments By Sue Byrom Rock 'n roll has never really been presented seriously to national television audiences but on Friday (Channel 7 at 9 p.m.) Malcolm Leo and Andrew Solt, producers and directors of a two-hour, prime-time special titled "Hemes of Rock 'n' Roll," aim to change that.

Leo and Solt have produced a documentary that Includes some remarkable and never-before-seen film footage of the world's biggest rock stars, set against the evolution of rock music over the last years. Leo explained how the project came about: The Idea came to us two years ago when we were both involved in researching period documentaries and kept coming across amazing footage of musicians In the '50s. "We decided to see If we could get together a show on the history of rock," he said. Although there have been documentaries on rock in the past, Ieo and Solt feel theirs is different. "We're not showing contemporary film of the artists on the show." explained Leo.

"The film we use Is the great early rock performers in their prime. We chose to relive the time when the artist was performing. In other words, a look at Chuck Berry hen he had his hit as opposed to later on hen he was still vital, but his energv wasn't as strong as it was back In '56. "The story which emerged out of all the footage and we had over 400.0U) feet of it. which we had to cut down to lim.iW) feet is the rise of rock 'n' roll, its fall in the late '50s, and its rise again," screen.

There was also some criticism of the choice of actor Jeff Bridges as host of the special a choice which Solt defended. "Jeff's a musician himself, and he loved the project hen approached him. We had to think of an audience beyond the initial musical audience," said Solt. "We needed someone with some kind of TV appeal, and Jeff was the right choice." With their two-year project finally completed, Solt and Leo have only one regret: that they couldn't have had a third hour. Other than that they feel the two years they spent personally digging out clips, the almost $1 million they had to spend on legal fees Clearing all the rights to each piece of film and the decisions on what to include and what to shelve, were well worth it.

Playing switchics Sometime soon, rcRular fans of Channel HO (KDTV) will he tuning in to their favorite Spanlsh-lanRuaRp proRrnms and instead Ret "Mr. Robots." "The EKctrlc Company" and "Over Easy," Conversely, San Mateo County residents who usually watch public broadcasting programs on Channel 14 (KCSM), which originates at the College of San Mat(o, will dial 14 and he offered such shows as "Not idem," "Sennra De Cardenas" and "Enrique El Polivoz." The answer, of course, is that educational Channel 14 and Spanish Channel fiO any day now will be switching frequencies and since neither station has the financial resources to blanket the Bay Area with announcements to that effect there's going to be some confusion until viewers pet things straightened out. When the switch occurs, Channel fiO will be KCSM, the educational station, and Channel 14 KDTV, the Spanish station operaled by Balua de San Francisco Television Company, an active af filiate of the growing Spanish Television Network. Vtliy the switch? Channel fiO longed for a lower position on the channel dial for years. Ideally, of course, it would have liked a sioi on the V1IF band from Channels 2 through Channel 14 is an acceptable position be ause it is the very first I'HF channel on a hand that runs from 14 to 84.

Although modern TV wis are made with supposedly equal tuning caducities for Ixith James Brown and Fats Domino. There's also a large section on Elvis Presley and the Beatles. The film on Bob Dylan was contributed by Dylan himself. It's a rare piece of color film from Itji when he was with his group before they became The Band in London. Bruce Springsteen gave the two producers a piece of film that has never been seen before.

Even the Rolling Stones visited Leo and Solt and stayed until 5 a.m. to look at film of themselves they'd never seen and to watch clips of Chuck Berry in 1958 over and over again. The result is a show that has already been highly praised by those who have seen it When it was ready to be screened, the producers found themselves Inundated with requests and ended up renting a 1.400seat hall for the event, instead of the small screening room as originally planned. The audience reaction was very positive. There was a lot of excitement when the early footage was show and interestingly enough, hisses and boos hen Pat Boone came on said Leo.

Although some of the most fascinating film Is of the obvious stars of the period, including rare footage of the Beatles In the Cavern, the Rolling Stones performing "Jumping Jack Flash" and Bob Dylan performing in England, the importance black music had on rock 'n' roll is the real historical attraction of the special. "The black contribution to rock 'n' roll has never really been recognized fully," explained Leo. "What's more important is that there would be no rock 'n' roll without black musicians. It has quite simply been a logical progression, whether it came from blues and gospel which It did then merged with rhythm 'n' blues, with a dash of country-western and a little hard-driving boogie oogie. But the as well as the major achievements throughout the last 25 years, have' always owed a great debt to black performers." The duo did their homework.
