Saturday, "August 18, 1973 The Ottawa Journal 23 Glenda Reiser wins medal for Canada MOSCOW (CP-AP) Glenda Reiser of Ottawa and Dianne Jones of Saskatoon put Canada in the medal list Friday at the World University Games. While Miss Reiser picked up a bronze medal in the metre run and Miss Jones a silver in the pentathlon, the men's basketball team won its second straight game. The men came from behind to defeat Mexico 71-60 in preliminary round-robin competition, which assured Canada of a berth in the next round. Canada won its first matc 111-71 over Iran. Paola Cacchi of Italy took the gold medal in the metre race.

Mrs. Cacchi, 28, from Milan, set the pace throughout the second half of the race for a Games' record time of four minutes, 10.7 seconds. The 1972 Olympic bronze medallist finished well ahead of Miss Reiser, the girl from whom the Italian star the world mile record earlier this month. Miss Reiser, 18, was second in 4:12.5 and Tonka Petrova of Bulgaria third in 4:13.5. Thelma Wright of Vancouver wound up fourth in 4:13.8.

Nadezhda Tkatchenko, a chunky Russian girl, picked up the fifth gold medal for the Soviet Union in Friday's competition and the country's ninth after two days when she won the five-event pentathlon. She had 4,629 points, well ahead of second-place finisher Tatiana Vorokhobko of the Soviet Union, who had 4,444 points, and Miss Jones, 23,. with 4,370. The final event in the pentathlon, a two-day test, was the 200-metre run, in which Miss Vorokhobka had the best clocking with 24.1 seconds. Miss Tkatchenko was second in 24.8 and Miss Jones third i in 25.8.

Miss Jones, who won the high jump section of the pentathlon Thursday, was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.05 metres. In the women's 400 metres semi-final, Joyce Sadowick of Burnaby, B.C., finished third in 53.5 seconds to qualify for the final. Judith Canty of Australia won in 53.3. Nadyezhda Kolesnikov of the Soviet Union was first in the other semi-final with a time of 52.6. The Canadian men's and women's volleyball teams both took victories in preliminary sub-group action.

The men won 3-0 over Lebanon and the women defeated Poland 3-1. In basketball, however, the women lost 54-51 to Romania. 733.9825 DIAL A MECHANIC 5 DAYS PER WEEK 10 A.M.- -12 NOON We felt for a long time that everyone who owns car at some time or another has a nagging problem that you would like to talk about. Now you can. Simply phone the number below and you will be able to talk to trained mechanic about it.

This is not a commercial, He won't sell you anything. In fact he won't even mention Jim Tubman Motors. PUBLIC SERVICE PROVIDED by BANK ST. (At ALTA VISTA) PHONE 733-9825 FrEE KICK lighting pylons for the skating.

The pylons and the holes were still there in June, and the returfing job was ruined forever. Remember the beautiful playing surface at Sir Robert Borden High School just last year? Just look at it now. "They" may try to tell you that soccer did the damage, but this is strictly not true. You may say, Well, of course, these people have a job to do, but I can't help wondering why they never plough up a field in the middle of the high school football season. I also asked City Parks department last year why it was that in 1950 a group of soldiers in Hong Kong could go into the bush with a flamethrower and a bulldozer and come up with a soccer field in a couple of hours, but they, with their budget of $1,200.000 per year couldn't even lay down some field markings.

I accompanied Tony Chapman and Jim Heppell to City Hall in February when a brief was presented by this association requesting a $1,200 grant to assist with our representative teams. The request was turned down. At the meeting, one alderman queried, "We give these people facilities, don't we?" "Yes, Yes," said the board in unison. My contention is that they may think they give us facilities, but they certainly don't give us soccer fields. What they give us are patches of grass, and usually the grass is in pretty bad shape.

Some say we shouldn't rock the boat, that if we do, we will lose what we already have. We mustn't adopt this attitude we've got. to go on being militant about our facilities." Such poor sports facilities are a reflection of the lackadaisical, unconcerned attitude that civic officials are showing to the plight of a concerned group of individuals. We seek no special privileges; all that we ask is that soccer be given the same opportunities that are directed 1 to other sports. Any comments would be greatly appreciated and can be sent to my address on 21, Myrle Avenue.

CUSTOM MUFFLER By MARIANO DE MARINIS There has been a great deal of concern in Ottawa recently regarding the lack of suitable playing fields. I was told by officials of the Ottawa Tigers, for instance, that they had been promised a pitch by the City of Ottawa, but unfortunately, they have been forced to obtain a private high school field for the past four years. Visiting clubs of the National Soccer League have been shocked by the poor quality and inadequacy of this location. This year, the Tigers were granted the use of the Mooney's Bay Sport Complex only to find that it had to be closed down to allow for repairs.

The City of Ottawa could not find them a suitable replacement and the Tigers had no alternative but to acquire their former ground. So far, Ottawa is the only representative in the National Soccer League that has not had a turf supplied by the municipality. It is obvious that if civic officials continue to act in this manner, they will not only suppress, but eventually stifle the growth of soccer in the Ottawa area. Ken Irons, a referee, coach and over-all soccer enthusiast, who along with Jim Heppell and Tony Chapman has given a tremendous amount of time and devotion to the establishment of the Ottawa and District Minor Soccer Association, feels that this predica-. ment is also evident in the minor soccer ranks.

Following are a few of his observations: "When I returned to the city in January, plans were being laid for the coming season, and Jan Knappers told me that he was in charge of the grounds arrangements. I told Jan that "They" would break his heart. "No," he said, "I don't think so. You had your methods and I have mine. I am sure we will have no ground problems." Four months later, I met a weary-looking Jan Knappers on a touchline, and asked him how he found the problem of coping with our.

field requirements. Said he to me, more or less, "They're breaking my heart." I didn't want to say "I told you so" but it's obvious the pattern of previous years is still prevalent, We will be given permission to use a field, say, on Mondays and Wednesdays from May to October. One week after the permission is granted, you find the field ploughed up for re-turfing, but you weren't told that in the first place. Or a coach phones you, as happened on more than one occasion last year, to tell you that he has a game scheduled for a particular ground the next day but that workmen had dug a three-feet deep ditch right across the playing surface. At the end of the season, two years ago, Highland Park was re-turfed and I was told it cost in the region of $8,000.

You, the taxpayers paid for it, we couldn't use it of course, while the re-turfing was being done, but we were happy in the knowledge that for the next season we would have an excellent field in thae McKellar area. Some hopes, that winter, an ice-rink was laid on top of the newly-laid turf. City parks even dug holes to install flood- FREE INSTALLATION LIFE TIME GUARANTEE (available) MUFFLERS AND SHOCK ABSORBERS Guaranteed In Writing CARLING MUFFLERS Wheel Alignment 1688 CARLING Licensed Mechanic AT CLYDE Free Suspension Check 722-0540 CAPITAL MUFFLER SERVICE IMPERIAL MUFFLER CENTRE 1115 ST.
