PAN AM GAMES Page 56-83rxamlnrr Oct. 1 6, 1 975 Brazilian triple jumps 58-8 The United States won seven gold medals four In shooting but still trailed the Cubans In first places 22-18. The. U.S. led overall 4642.

The crowd at Olympic Stadium booed when the Star Spangled Banner was played following Kathy Weston's victory in the 800 meters, and when they booed again at the introduction of 20-kilometer walk bronze medal winner, Larry Young, he gave those in attendance the "thumbs down," sign. in Mexico City's rarefied air aa Sals Oct. 16-18 LIMITED QUANTITIES AVAILABLE United Press International MEXICO CITY Once again the conditions were just right in the slightly crumbling stadium that sits on the edge of the mammoth University of Mexico. There was no wind, temperatures were pleasant, and there was just enough spring in a pair of young legs. And with all of these Intangibles coming together' in the rarefied air of the southern Sierra Madre mountains, another astonishing world record was set yesterday.

Joao Carlos Oliveria, a wisecracking, lanky Brazilian who had never before leaped farther than 55-11 in the triple jump, pulverized the world record with an effort of 58-8 lk to win the Pan American games gold medal. He bettered the previous mark owned by Russian Viktor Saneyev by more than a foot and a half. "I came to compete, not to win," said Oliveria, who briefly succumbed to tears after his jump. "I did riot expect to win. This is something I will remember all the rest of my life." It was seven years ago, in the same stadium, that Bob Beamon produced his 29-2 Vfc long jump, a mark that cracked Ralph Boston's record by two feet -and has been proclaimed by at least one medical man to be the first terminal record in sports history one that will never be broken.

That seems unlikely, but Beamon's mark has remained unchallenged since 1968, just as Oliveria's will surely be untouched for years to come. The tremendous individual effort reduced the rest of yesterday's Pan American games action to an afterthought. There was another round of controversy the Americans charging the Cubans with using illegal equipment in the discus throw and the medals being held up as a result. A jury of games officials will decide today whether to allow the protest. ii 6 ill Mgp SLEEPING BAGS CjHANITE f'OLARGUAHD BAG CLASS (2i)ris Dn.roniinu.Kl) SNOWLION (2nrlsS DtsronimurUI SNOWLION TOURSACK SNOWLION NORTHSTAR -SNOWLION WONDLHRAG SNOWLION OVEHBAG 10 RENTAL POLARCUARD BAGS RENTAL DOWN BAGS PARKAS GHANITE DOWN PARKA WHOOD SNOWLION (2nrh8i Discuntmiml) CLASS (2ncis Disrontinnerf) 1 SNOWLIONULTIMATE PARKA, I Down) SNOWLION PALISADE PARKA (Pol.ii- -qiMKl) GRANITE POLARGUARD VEST GRANITE MOUNTAIN PARKA RENTAL PARKAS PACKS WILDERNESS EXPERIENCE?
