He made his theatrical debut at 17 in Jan deHartog's "Skipper Next to God," and was a big success in a musical comedv called "The Eiffel Tower Killing." He also was a night club star at The Galerie, a cabaret in the Rue de Seine.

Wednesday night he was the star of a dreadful little musical play called "That Hat!" A lot of lack of judgment went into this one. The original creative division of this work was dominated by Cy Young, who wrote the music and lyrics and adapted the book from an old play called "An Italian Straw Hat," which reportedly wasn't very good to begin with. Marc Breaux and Dee Dee Wood choregraphed the sprightly dances and Disney contributed his own special brand of artistry, making a joy to behold.

There are one or two slow spots but these may be forgiven because of the general excellence of the film. :30 cial kind of magic in bringing F. L. Travers' stories to the screen in one delightful film that will give joy to children and pleasure to adults. A couple of generations of children have been brought up on the "Mary Poppins" stories so there is a ready-made audience for the film, which is being distributed by Buena Vista. Produced in the format of a musical comedy, the picture preserves Mrs.

Travers' whimsical nanny, Mary Poppins, with all her charmingly fantastic attributes intact, one of which is her ability to soar into the air whenever she takes a fancy to fly. THE MEDIUMS THAT Disney works with are ideal for presenting Mary Poppins at her lovable best. He has combined music, tricky photography and animation with harmonious results. His most endearing scenes are a combination of live action and animated cartoons. Photographed in Technicolor for broad screen exhibition, the film presents Julie Andrews of "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot" fame in her screen debut as the ideal nanny who first creates havoc in the Banks family and then produces concord based on a fine philosophical idea that "a apoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down." Julie is jireat in the role, and sings ever so sweetly.

It is a rather foolish thing as performed. The action is set in Paris in 1895 and apparently was supposed to have an air of Jiaughtiness about it. The nearest approach to that goal was much pinching of buttocks. At best the songs were pretty ordinarj- and the dancing was, well, confused.

Here and there a bit of stage business came through, especially when Olaf and Barbara Sharma worked together. We liked them in a duet called "We Have Never Met."
