46 THE GETTYSBURG TIMES, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1991 McMahon will miss three to four weeks Associated Press PHILADELPHIA Jim McMahon will be out of action for at least three weeks with sprained ligaments in his right knee, but the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback won't be placed on injured reserve. "We look for him to be back in three to four weeks," Eagles coach Rich Kotite said Tuesday. That's all we know at this point." McMahon's right knee collapsed under him in the first quarter of Monday night's 23-0 loss to the Washington Redskins. He was replaced by Pat Ryan. "He's very tough, a resilient guy," Kotite said.

'TBut maybe the better guess is four weeks. Well find out. I'm not putting him on injured reserve." Kotite said Ryan and rookie Brad Goebel would work equally in practice this week and he would decide on the starter against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the end of the week. He also said he'd try out a couple of quarterbacks Wednesday but expressed doubt that anyone signed could be ready to play by 'Haus Call (From page IB) His numbers aren't as mind- boggling as his 1990 MVP-winning stats, but his clout is hard to overlook. Bonds leads the league in on- base percentage (.407) and is among the league leaders in walks (103), slugging percentage stolen bases (41) and RBI (111).

Also considered: Terry Pendleton, Ron Gant, John Kruk, Howard Johnson and Fred McGriff. Cy Young Tom Glavine, Atlanta. Glavine appeared to have the award already engraved by the beginning of August but fell into a mini-slump. Still, he is on the verge of becoming a 20-game winner (19-11) and his 2.60 ERA ranks fourth in the NL. Glavine has added a power breaking ball to his assortment, and it's allowed him to become a strikeout pitcher (2nd best 187 K's).

Also considered: John Smiley, Jose Rijo, Dennis Martinez and Lee Smith. Rookie Ray Lankford, St. Louis. Billed as a can't-miss prospect, Lankford did miss for the first half of the After the all-star break, Lankford, a speed demon whom the Cards hoped wotrld replace Vince Coleman in centerfield, has compiled gaudy numbers. He leads the NL in triples (15) and is fifth in stolen bases (40).

Tennis-- (From page IB) lot more after today's match against Biglerville, but it's anybody's guess. Chrissy Leslie is battling back from the flu and Mary (Musselman) hurt her back I don't know how much she's hurting or how much of a factor that will be." Key first round matches that look to be fairly even are Alison Lucabaugh of New Oxford against Knsten Dang of Littlestown and Mary Musselman of Gettysburg against Jodi Frank of James Buchanan, according to some of the coaches. Still up in the air is the status of Kathy O'Brien of Harnsburg Academy, who is scheduled to play New Oxford's Tammy O'Brien in the first round. According to Harrisburg Academy Coach Andy Stoner, Kathy O'Brien plans to be out of town for the weekend and will miss the tournament although Gettysburg Athletic Director Monty Illick, who handled the seeding arrangements, said he was not informed that O'Brien would be absent. If O'Brien does not show, April Cease of Biglerville, the first alternate, will play.

Harrisburg Academy's top player, Stacy Richardson, has also backed out of the tournament and will be in New York for four days, according to Stoner. For that reason, Harrisburg Academy will not have a doubles team in the four-team doubles tournament, although that was news to Volleyball Sunday. "Ill have to take a look," he said. "But if not realistic for somebody to come off the street and start." Among those available are John Fourcade, Chuck Long, Steve Pel- luer, Anthony Dilweg, Gary Hogeboom and Tony Eason. Kotite dismissed the possibility of making a deal for a quarterback on another team's roster.

'Teople are not going to give up a solid backup. They fear what happened to us," he said. He insisted that in spite of losing Randall Cunningham and now McMahon, neither he nor his players had lost confidence in the team's ability to win. "We've got a good football team. We're 3-2.

We've got a good chance to be 4-2. Our number one thing is to win," Kotite said. He admitted he was concerned about the lack of offensive production against the Redskins. The Eagles totaled 89 yards. "The stats speak for themselves.

It was the lowest production I've ever been involved in as a player or a coach," Kotite said. Also considered: Orlando Merced, Pete Schourek, Doug Simons, Mickey Morandini, Wes Chamberlain and Luis Gonzalez. Comeback Orel Hershiser, Los Angeles. The Bulldog missed most of the 1990 season with arm problems, presumably career-threatening. But Hershiser made a triumphant return to the Dodgers' starting rotation, and his effort in Monday's win over the Padres during the heat of a pennant race solidified his stock.

Also considered: Pendleton, Otis Nixon and Mitch Williams. Manager Bobby Cox, Atlanta. Insiders said the Braves were a year away from contending in the West in spring training. Cox didn't want to wait. He's turned a last-place club into a pennant- contending club in a matter of months.

The Braves trailed the Dodgers by 9A games at the all- star break but quickly chopped at the lead. Win or lose, Cox has done a masterful job handling his staff. And, like Minnesota's Kelly, Cox used wise free agent pickups (Pendleton, Nixon, Juan Berenguer, Rafael Belhard and Sid Bream) and trades (Mike Bielecki and Damon Berryhill) to his advantage. Also considered: Jim Leyland and Joe Torre. Stoner.

"(Stoner) gave me two names -Patty Johnson and Kathy O'Brien for singles," said Illick. "I got the impression that he was not interested in playing doubles." Instead, Biglerville, Littlestown, Gettysburg and James Buchanan will participate in the doubles tournament, which also begins Friday at noon at Gettysburg College. Tncia Crum and Katie Elliott of Biglerville will square off against Karri Pottorffand Kristen Dang of Littlestown while Heather Pfitzinger and Lauren Hill of Gettysburg are matched against Rochelle Moreland and Jodi Frank in the other set. The top two teams advance to the District III Doubles Tournament, which is scheduled to start Oct. 19 at Manheim Township High School.

Gettysburg captain Kim Rain served for four points to trim the margin to 11-8, but Weimer served out the middle game on a four-point run. The Maidens had seven service winners in the middle game, as the Bullets continually mishandled the serve. "I think Gettysburg probably had an offnight passing," understated Bock. "They have really hard hitters, and they never got into the ballgame probably like they wanted to." Omdorff sparked the Maidensin the finale. Three kills and a block turned a 6-5 deficit into an 11-6 lead.

She added two more kills and two defensive saves during a 3-0 run that gave Juniata (12-4) a 14-7 lead. Feared Gettysburg hitters Sam Chereb (six kills, 14 assists) and Jen Cook (10 kills, five scores) were never able to offset Juniata's tenacious defense. "We got scared," summed Drexel. "We have six players on the floor and didn't get it together as a team, and we needed to do that against a team like this." Juniata has not lost a conference game since dropping a verdict to Gettysburg on Nov. 9, 1981.

Since then, the Maidens have won the MAC 10 consecutive seasons and have been a national semifinalist eight times. "We don't think about it a whole lot," said Bock of the 135-game winning streak. "We don't talk about it at all. Ill kind of be glad when it's over." Last season, Gettysburg took two of the first three games at Juniata but dropped the final two games in a thrilling 15-7, 12-15, Maidens triumph.
