You Asked For It, which was on U.S. TV from 1950 to 1957, had Art Baker as the host. if In a worfd with so much strike, tension and unhapplness, it Is so relaxing to sit In your own living room and experience for one hour a life that is made richer, happier and brighter by putting a little music Into It. I'm referring to The Law-1 rence Welk Show. So for all of us Welk fanshow about keep- tag the show on? The fact' that The Lawrence Welk Show has been cancelled does not mean that It will not be seen any more.

This show, along with Hee Haw and many others, will be offered for syndication. Lawrence Welk is preparing new shows as well 1 -as some reruns for this market. i( if if I'm an ardent fan of David Janssen. He was so great In the role of The Fugitive. Will he be back on TV with another series? Yes.

David Janssen was recently seen in a made-for-TV movie which was a pilot for a new series. It is called O'Hara, United States Treasury. It co-stars Harry M6rgan (from Dragnet). Janssen is also working on a movie about outer space called "The Alien." (Joumol Photo by Dominion Wide) and where was he born? were Pat Boone and Shirley My husband, and I can't agree on who played the old man In the movie called "The Old Man and the Sea." The 1958 movie based on the novel by Ernest Hemingway, starred Spencer Tracy as the persistent old man. Could you tell me If Donna Douglas of the cancelled Beverly Hillbillies was ever in any movies? Also, Is she married? Donna Douglas, who was born Doris Smith, has a long list of beauty titles to her credit.

She made her motion picture debut in "Career" with Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine. She also appeared in "Li'l Come Back" and It seems like time passes" in seasons forDavid Wiffen. He doesn't recollect with ease all the "whens" that led to now. But there's an as-yet-unde-termined date coming up that will be an important one for the 29-year-old Ottawa-based singer. A new 10-track LP he recorded for the Fantasy label in San Francisco will be released soon and it could do for him what albums have done for -Joni Mitchell or for Ot- tawa Bruce LOCKburn.

nucauy, a single cuuea from the LP is gaining consid erable air time on Canadain radio stations. The title is "More Often.Than Not," written by Wjffen, and already it is-, showing up on record charts across the country. Last June, David signed a five-year recording contract with Fantasy, the same label ft ft' ft Musical The most surprising thing about the Bruce Cockburn concert at Pat's High "School recently was the young man who played before him Jerry McKenna. McKenna didn't say he Just sang 15 or excellent songs of varying tempos and moods while the audience reaction became' warmer and warmer, All but -one of the songs were his own. When Cockburn came, on stage after Jerry had been asked to play a second set, he motioned back toward Jerry and said, "He's good isn't he?" From the applause, everyone in the audience felt (he same.

McKenna Is a tall, "often grinning Ottawa songwriter, who's tough to size up. At 19, he's a kind of prodigy, exploding into prose, painting, and. songwriting with equal dedication. He gets about four hours sleep a night, drinks more than he eats, writes prolih'oal-Jy particularily at four or five in-me morning and painting. He wont give any indication of the number of songs that he's actually written.

Informally, say in the performers' room at the back of Le Hibou, he'll go on endlessly, singing just the first verses, so at the moment his listeners get interested, he's. onto the next song. He wrote his first song, Requiem, about four years ago jnwhat he-callsl'a complete stroke of beginner's luck." In the period that followed. he got into a rock theme, but, as he says, "the lyrics were alright but the music was nowhere." Things Came to a crisis for Jerry last Disappointed with his music, he sold his guitar and mooned around for two solid months thinking- it over. Then as he was 'walking past one of the pawnshops in the Ottawa market, he saw a Yamaha 180 in the window.

He bought it and immediately wrote This Town is a Rerun. Since then his songs have been getting progressively better, and his present songs brim with a melody that seems to spring right out of the syllables. A few months ago, Jerry walked into the back room of he Rendezvous and was amazed to hear Bill Stevenson at the piano break into Requiem, singing "poets are the prophets" in a high squeaky voice. Stevenson had heard Jerry at Le Hibou and remembered the song. Stevenson and McKenna seem to understand each other, which is some indication of the complexity of Jerry's character, Jerry likes to wind a cloak of dissipation around himself, hang around the worst kind of "Frankie and Johnny" opposite-Elvis Miss Dougto.asW is single ana lives in uus nngeics.

if if How old is Clint Eastwood and -Is he starring In a new movie? Clint Eastwood was born in San Francisco in 1930, so he's 40. Yes. Clint is in a new movie with Elizabeth Hartman and Geraldine Page. The movie takes "place during the Civil War in the South and is called "The Beguiled." Who starred in the movie version of "Desire Under the Elms" and what year was it released? "Desire Under the Elms," released in 1958, starred Sophia Loren, Anthony Perkins, Burl Ives and Pernell Roberts. It was Sophia's debut in an American film.

really en- Joyed. When and where was the movie made? The scenery was beautiful. Also, how old Jones when the movie was made? I II I "April Love," which was based on a novel by George Agnew Chamberlain, was released in 1957. The beautiful scenery was shot in Kentucky. Pat Boone and Shirley Jones, both 36, were 23 years old when the movie came out.

Who played the part of Henry VIII in the very old movie The Private Life of Henry VIII?" Charles Laughton reigned as Henry VIII in this 3933 movie. Laughton won an Academy Award for his portrayal. The movie also had Elsa Lanchester, Merle Oberoh, John Loder and Robert Donat. Is the actor who plays Howard on Mayberry R.F.D. married? If so, to whom? Yes.

In fact. Jack Dodson, who plays Howard, has just become a father for Jhe second time. His wife, art director Mary Weaver, gave birth to a baby girl. Amy Elizabeth. Who Is the actor who plays Simon Gilbey on As The World Turns? Can you tell me something about him? Jerry Lacey plays the role of the millionaire tycoon who promises to disrupt things on the CBS-TV soap (in the script, that Is).

Lacey made his Broadway debut playing Humphrey Bogart in the play named, after Bogey's famous line in "Play It Again, Sam." i Tm excited about a new Dick Van Dyke Show because his old one was so terrific. What is It about and who is on the show with Dick? Is the old cast back? The show has Dick playing a TV talk show host in Phoenix, Ariz. Carl Reiner1, who created Van Dyke's last brilliant situation comedy (which copped several Emmies), has created this new show. Although the same cast (Mary Tyler Moore, Morey Amsterdam, Rose Marie and Richard Deacon) will not be back Van Dyke will be supported by co-star Hope Lange (The Ghost and Mrs. Muir) who plays his wife, Nancy Dussault, Fannie Flagg and Marty Brill, when the show makes Its debut next fall.

Can you settle an argument? I say Dragnet was a TV series and never on radio. My mom says It was a popular radio show. Who's right? Your mother is Tight. The Dragnet series began on the NBC radio network In January of 1949. It wasn't brought to TV until 1952.

Jack Webb was the creator, director, producer and star of the Dragnet series. I saw David Janssen In a TV movie recently where he played government agent and I thought he was good. Any chance that show will be a series? Yes, the movie titled "O'Hara, U.S. Treasury" was a pilot about an officer on the U.S. Treasury Department, produced by Jack Webb (Dragnet and Adam-12).

The show is sched-1 tiled as a regular TV series next season and David Janssen, who starred in the hightly successful Fugitive, series has the Marring role. whlch records the Creedance Clearwater Revival. The record company Itself is unique, complex located in San Francisco's "Bay" area. Of colossal size, it Includes such features as gymnasium, a solarium, and a record-pressing plant. David made three trips to California to record in March, September and October of last year.

He has written eight of the songs and de- scribes the album's, tone es -easy-iistemng" and "me- ncholy." but with some up- tempo numbers. Although Wiffen has become known as a singer-composer, the unassuming folksinger says he didn't really "set out to become one." He feels no compulsion to turn out songs at frequent intervals. In fact he writes only ft ft Oasis: McKenna: Cool Stream in the Desert By" Robin create the Image ofowa. a dissolute, poverty stricken writer an image he works at almost as hard es his writing. He's what you might get if you crossbred Dylan Thomas With Holden and handed the result guitar.

But at the same time he spends hours tramping through the countryside. He lives in Alta Vista and almost every day spends some time wandering the NCC woods and fields. Jerry considers himself a country song writer, though not in the strict country western vein. Actually his music falls more into the folk-rock-blues-country-j azz-etc. stream of music 'which James Taylor typifies and which hasn't yet been successfully labeled.

McKenna's songs ere pri-m a 1 1 about McKenna; they're a personal series of songs. Not limited to himself or to Ottawa or to Canada but personal nevertheless: his iiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitniiitunuHtiminnntnmiitnwM By P. H. NICOL Me and Bobby McGee Is one of the few songs to become a hit record ftfr two vocalists Roger Miller and Gordon Lightfoot at almost the same time. This extraordinary occurence was prompted by an equally extraordinary song' writer, Kris Kristofferson, who is appearing this weekend at LE HIBOU.

Kristofferson, Jxrn In Brownsville, Texas, moved to California while still In high school. and found himself, as a country fan, somewhat of a silent majority with his Hank Williams records. But he didn't stay silent for long. As he says: "I started making up songs when I was 11, but the first one I had published was in "58. 1 iJon't know what 'happened to it.

The guy was some kind of crook." Kristofferson, a Rhodes scholar, took his English degree at Oxford University and ran across a British promoter who deoided to make him into a rock and roll idol, end renamed him Kris Carson, the golden throated thrush. AU it did was to embarrass him right out of the music' business and though he had almost a year left of his scholarship, he returned to the United States, got married and Joined the army. When he left the army in By Mar got when he finds something worthy of a song. Sometimes there are long lapses between. The most recent song was six weeks ago.

Altogether ha has written about 20 numbers since 1960. i But something which must speak for their quality Is the Interest shown by other Anns Murray and Tommy Grabam have both recorded "David's Tom Rush and Whitney Sunday have recorded "Driving and Jerry Jeff Walker and Ian and Sylvia have recorded "More Often Than Not." With the release of the new -LP, there will probably be more. As David puts it "being a singer-songwriter has become the accepted thing and ft ft McNeill dreams, loves. Some of the songs with which we will probably be-come 'familiar are: Back Down to the Country, which he considers perhaps his best Charity Morning, Sketchings, And Still Riding High on You. In land of the corner guitar lesson, Jerry is that rare -occurence the natural-born guitar player.

That's one oT the funny Ironies about him. He still knows the names of. only four of the many chords he uses. He doesn't consider himself particularly good guitar player, but he thinks he's adequate. His voice is more than adequate.

The formula for the successful North American song used -to be and to an extent still is, fearful banality Judiciously blended with threadbare vocabulary. But times are changing, and writers like Jerry are one of wffee ouse 1965 Kris moved to Nashville and recorded his first hit, "Vietnam Blues." Then, strangely enough, nothing happened for two years. Those two years were tough, but it was here that he really paid his dues as a songwriter end performer. He swept floors, cleaned ashtrays, tended bar, got divorced, end flew helicopters for offshore oil rigs. Anything to eat and stay in Nashville.

Then fate stepped In when Kris met Fred Foster who got him ft new publisher, Combine niinfimffliiimnmimfflmttmimMmmiinnfliiHimMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiMriiiiiHiiiiiiiiiiniiiif uimiinuHnnnHinmuiinniimiiiiiiiiHriiiiiHtiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiiiiiniiiiiiniiniiNiiiiiiniiHiiiiiiiiiiiiMii iniiiiNiiiiiiinuiiiiiniimMiiiiiniiiuiimiiniiiiiiinHiiKiimiHHimHiiiHiHiiiiinnmiiiiiiiMmmiiiiiiiim I vhy we kM A there Is a lot more interest in songwriters." He began singing at age 18 In London, England; In 1958, a year later, he moved to Toronto to be with his family, and continued singing. Two years later he turned professional. Wiffen didn't really decide to move to Ottawa. Somehow, he just kept coming back here. Eventually, he Joined The Children a group which Included Bill Hawkins, Sandy Crawley anil Bruce Cockburn.

In 1967, he became a member of the original Three's a Crowd with Trevor Veitch (now guitarist with Tom Rush), Brent Titcomb (who penned "Sing High, Sdng Low" tor Anne Murray), Donna ft' ft. the signs. The magic of Jerry's songs is in the lyrics a fresh, cool stream Jn the ver- bal desert of contemporary music. jerry McKenna Is playing second act to Symix at Le Hibou next weekend. An Ottawa producer was making a pilot for the series and planned to use either Jerry Jeff Walker or Dion as host. However, Jerry Jeff Walker was out of town and Dion, playing at Le Hibou at the time, came down with a sore throat Wiffen and Ann Mortlifee, who was In Ottawa with the revue.
