Gun Spree Quelled By Copter Oakland's experimental police helicopter was called into service last night to help track down a man who went on a shooting spree. The machine itself came under fire before a patrolman in a squad car brought down James O. Richardson, 38, with a shotgun blast. Richardson, a mechanic, of 10120 E. 14th was reported in critical condition at Highland Hospital.

Police said they received two calls during the evening that Richardson had threatened Carol Hatch, 39, with both a knife and a gun. On the second occasion, the call came from friends at 1044 86th who said Richardson had a rifle and had fired several shots at the woman who was hiding in some bushes down the street. The helicopter, piloted by Officer John Regan, was dispatched to light up the scene. Richardson fired at it twice, Regan reported, but missed both times. A bystander, Charles Laster, 41, of 1629 85th attempted to wrest the rifle away from Richardson, but failed.

Laster, too, was fired on, but again the shots missed. Richardson wasbrought down by Patrolman Gary Delbridge, who fired twice with his shotgun as the suspect stood on a lawn in the spotlight from the hovering helicopter.
