Leave (From page 1A) can't," he said. Goodhng also said that he did not like the exemption for businesses with 50 or less employees, which said that a business with less than 50 employees was better than a company that has more than 50 workers The ranking minonty member of the House Education and Labor Committee said a better way to encourage employers to give unpaid family and medical leave, and avoid government intervention, is to offer tax incentives He said that would allow employers and employees to negotiate a benefits package they both find desirable In a press conference outside his business in York, Democratic nominee Paul Kilker said he disagreed with Goodhng's vote on the issue He said the legislation can benefit businesspeople as well as employees, and his company is an example. This isn't a liberal issue or a conservative issue This is an issue that concerns people It is an issue that I think is one of decency in regards to employees," he said. "Employees of any company have to be looked at as the chief asset The number one thing that drives an organization forward," Kilker said.

The president and chief executive officer of General Graphics Services said his company has had a family and medical leave policy for four years, and it has not been detrimental to the company. In fact, Kilker said the House bill would set limits that are not in his policy, which has been used by five to 10 of the 170 workers at his company not including maternity leave situations. 1 can speak as a businessman. As I've said over and over again, I'm a businessman, I'm not a professional politician. This isn't something that is bad for business, he said "When you take a look at the situation that we're in today, we're dealing in a global economy.

We've got to stop this division between employees and employers and start to look at what the real issues are The real issues are we've got to begin to compete in a global economy," he said The Democrat said employers should be focusing on providing their employee with nght benefits, work environment and tools, they can compete. That will assure they are focusing all their energies on their jobs while at work. The last thing you need to do is to take and put fear in employees when an emergency comes up that they are going to have the risk of losing their jobs. I support the bill as a businessman I support the bill because it makes sense I support the bill because it is the nght thing to do," he said. Like Goodhng, independent candidate Thomas Humbert of Hanover said he is not in favor of the Medical and Family Leave bill It is one of the few pomtsin which Humbert, a Republican who switched to independent to run against Goodhng, agrees with a vote by the incumbent "I don't think there should be mandates on medical and family leave," Humbert said after a campaign rally However, Kilker said Goodhng and Humbert have no basis to say that the Medical and Family Leave legislation is detrimental to business.

They're as unqualified to make that statement as I can imagine They have no foundation to make that comment," he said. News tip? Call 334-1132 Paul W.
