to 7:10 B24, Sac. Tehama motor MAY 17, 1912 When the president charges Colonel Roosevelt with making a misstatement he might just as well throw gasoline ou a. fire. The things politically are going on now the assets of the Republican jiai'ty, hy the time the national convention meets, will be ter and a crutch. a porous plas- It seems that Colonel Wattersou is still playing the role of a fussy old woman sitting up nights with what remains of one of the most brilliant intellects of a vanishing period.

Some of our Republican brethren who discreetly silent until they could learn how the cat was going to Jump are now eagerly trying to get the rheumatic kink out of their progressive Republican, leg in time join the procession. to If one-half the Republican factious are saying about each other is true, the administration is so rotten that it smells like a Chinese laundry and a chajige from one faction to another will uot iiiake the administration more respectable. The only logical thing to do, therefore, is to elect a Democratic president. The Roosevelt success in California seems likely to make rival candidates of Francis J. Heiiey and Chester Bowell for Senator Perkins' seat.

Heuey is only a raw recruit and Rowell changes his political alliances with equal fficillty. Under the circumstances it would be the safest plan to elect a Democrat and one whose views are the same on both aides of the Sacramento river. Colonel Roosevelt recently wrote a long letter principally devoted to an excoriation of the bosses and deploring the failure of his boss nomination of his successor in which he declares tliat "there is just one candidate 1 propose to nominate against the bosses and that is myself." Rather significant, language to come from a maa who professes to be so anxious for the people to rule. Colonel Roosevelt modestly declares: "I typify and embody the great cause which con only be furthered by supporting me." The only great cause he can possibly refer to is his third lerm propaganda. It is inconceivable that the people of this country are willing to artmit that he is Ihe oniy man on earth who can be depended upon to see that the people are permitted to rule.

When Governor Johnson was mating his campaign Iu 1910 he charged that George A. Knight is an attorney for the corporations which the candidate was going to kick out of the politics of the state and he proved bis case to the sati.siaction of the people. But George knew enough lo climb into ihe band, wagon in the nick of time and governor Johnson effusively welcomes his resurrection from the graveyard of the has-beens. Kearth, who was engineer for tho district for twelve years nnd is now engineer for No. 730, was the next witness. Mr. Kearth testified that Colusa basin is sixty miles long with a downward grade toward Knights Landing ridge, and that'wat- ers overflowing from the Sacrauieu- to river, as far north as Glenn county run down the basin and lodge in the lower Colusa basin, where the lands of 108 are located. He also testified that there are twenty-two streams running fiom the.foothills into the basin, the waters of which also rim down Into the lower end of the basin.

Witness claimed to have been familiar with the run-off of these streams for a great many years and that 'it has been considerable. He also claims familiarity with the high water plane of the Sacramento river, which he says lias been materially raised during last fifteen yegjs. In 1895 extreme high water was only 37 feet, which is less than the height Amusements. No play recent years has made lien a universal appeal to the American public as has the American drama by Booth Tarklngton nnd Harry Leon Wilson, "The Jl nn From Home," which Is to be seen at the opera house Wednesday evening, May 23. Throughout it is the embodiment ot true, clean, wholesome Americanism. Those who went to the opera house Thursday evening were delighted with the motion pictures of two of the, world's most, famous actresses, Beruhardt and Rejane. If there was anybody present who had any doubts as to the genuineness of the pictures these doubts were soon dispelled, for when less than a half dozen views had been shown on the screen it became apparent that the audience was witnessing the greatest acting, tbe world, lias ever seen. The first pictures shown were those the great B'rench comedienne, in Siirdou's Mme. Sans-Gene, She is supported by her original com- and both star ajid company a.
