The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, add some prefty fine guitar licks, somefaditional sort of country harmonies, some foot-stomping rhythm, and a dash or two of autoharp and you end up with a pretty good working definition of bluegrass. music.

It has been a 6ince any of 'us were exposed to good bluegass music. Mike O'Reilly is probably the only popular performer in the area of this sort of style and since he left to study in far-off places, there has been a real lack of this most distinct flavor. LE HIBOU, who usually caters to the more popular forms of folk and rock music by bringing in the bigger names of thfese fields, is attempting to fill the gap by presenting this weekend a group from Toronto called James and The Good James Ackroyd is the lead guitarist who hails from Sas- katoon where he played with such people as Barry Ennis and the Keymen, and later with The Knack. other and each other's music and took things into their own hands from there. All of this oc- curred last February, but don't be fooled by the short time they have been together. They sound, like they have been at it for years. In addition they've had some pretty prestigious gigs. Consider the fact they have played in shows with Bonnie, and Delaney, Sy and the Family Stone, and (up-.

coming) Led Zeppelin. They were also a part of the Festival Express last summer; that caravan thing of entertainers that travelled across Canada bringing culture and 'bluegrass to the attention of thousands; Also, coming In the near fu- ture are a couple of CBC shows and (they hope) a recording contract. Be honest now. How many musicians have gotten so much action and so many things going for them in the first nine months of their existence? It tends to suggest their talent. James and the Good Brothers describe their music as the union of one rock guitarist and two bluegrass-Irish folk song fans who got together one night and managed to rub off on each other to their mutual benefit.

There were a great many performers, all of them 'good, and a very fine turn-out in audience. Most of the latter were' impressed bothwJth the show and the club itself.

The Mysnomer is a big, bright club located in the basement of Eglise Unie St. Marc on the corner of Lewis and Elgin Streets. Jantzen suggested that he considered the show quite a success and that they will be offering entertainment every Friday and Saturday from now on. Their policy is a little different though. Instead of having one person for two nights, or even one person each night as most clubs to, they will have three different performers every night.

This is a fine idea since people can see more enter tainers this way and the en tertainers, most of whom will be new to the scene, will have a lot of pressure taken off them. two weeks which the Carpenters would have liked to forget, had it not been 'for the good news that their latest single. We've "Only Just Begun. had just reached number one and sold a million copies. For the past fortnight, the Carpenters had been serving as a warm-up act for Engelbert Humperdinck, and even Spiro Agnew would realize just how bad that sort of billing would be for a couple of nice kids like Richard and Karen Carpenter. "The audience was all wrong for Richard reluctantly admitted.

"A lot of the patrons were season ticket holders, opera-goers, the sort of people who think Engelbert Humperdinck was the guy who 'wrote Hansel and "We'd be introduced," cut in Karen, "as A recording stars, the Carpenters, and all we'd hear would be snores from the front rows." Richard jumped, back in: "The rest of the audience fanatical Engelbert fans. You know, the middle-aged screamers. They'jd drag their husbands out to see freak out when he did his striptease act 'Vell, not really, but they do play The Stripper when he takes off his coat and tie, and loosens his belt. "When" he went into that routine, it was bedlam. Some women would race down the aisles" to the "stage," like the-kids used to for the Beatles.

One woman even threw a pair of panties at Engelbert." Karen smiled ruefully. "Trouble was, they fell short. Landed in the orchestra pit, right on the shoulder of one of the lady violin players. You can imagine the trouble she had; getting through the rest of the show." It's obviously going to be quite a while before the Carpenters agree to appear lWgIIIGH. had been again with the likes of Engelbert. "He's a real nice guy," Richard said, "but those fans of his are too "much. Wow." Not that, the Carpenters are likely to be faced with similar situations in the future. Now that We've Only Just Begun has repeated the phenomenal success of the group's Close to You hit, it would appear that the brother and sister Carpenter have just reached the door to the big-time. Close to You was only their second single (the first, a revival of the Beatles' Ticket to Ride, was a moderate success) and it has sold almost three million copies internationally.

JULIE AND FRANK Julie Still A Typical Teenager By BARBARA LEWIS NEW YORK Life for 16-year-old Julie Budd goes from one extreme to the other. One day she gets flowers from Frank Sinatra and the next she's cleaning her own room in the house she grew up in in Brooklyn. In some ways, the tiny singer with the big voice is a typical teenager she gets an allowance, she helps with the dishes, she has homework. In other, ways she's untypical she earns $100,000 a year, she spends about one week.

She inks nothing of facfng an audience of 1,100 at Caesers Palace in Las Vegas where she appeared on the same bill'-earlier this year with Sinatra. 'That doesn't give me the jitters at all," she says. "The only thing that scares is taking tests. I was up- all night last night studying for an English quiz." Most of the faces of stars who had appeared on Broadway eludes Julie.

"I'm dense that way," anyway," she explained. "Like the time Sinatra sent me the flowers. There I was in Las Vegas. I came into my dressing room at Caesers Palace and there was this huge basket of roses. I went searching through them to see if there was a card was signed and it And my manager was with me and I remembered saying 'Frank, It didn't dawn on me for the moment and thenJt-jeached me.

'Oh my I 'said, They're from While Julie has appeared in Las Vegas several times, she is too young yet to play the night-spots in New York. She is also too young to drink, to drive, to get married, or manage her own 'aft "fairs. She has two more years before she comes of age. None of these, however, are obstacles. She has no desire to drink, smoke, or drive.

She has no one in mind to marry and she is perfectly happy to let her father and her manager take care of her business affairs. By Ritchie Yorke five months is quite an achievement fpr any artist, let alone a relatively new one. The Carpenter, family moved to Los Angeles seven years ago from New Haven, 'and Richard and Karen have been singing professionally for three years. "We were in groups for a while," said Karen, who plays drums in addition to her charming vocals, "and one of them, Spectrum, did fairly well in Los Angeles. They didn't make any records, but they were quite well known, in the When Richard and Karen decided to go but alone, they todk along two of the Spectrum members as part of their" four-piece a up group.

TicKet to rude was their first single, from a debut album caned Offering, which made very little noise. Then, of course, came Close to You, a Hal David-Burt Bach-arach song which had been around for several years. i e-Warwick and Dusty Springfield had done the tune on albums," Richard said, "but we'd never heard either version. One day we were rehearsing for a performance with Burt Bacharach in which we were to do a medley of six Bacharach songsT Herb Alpert came into the studio and ask- ed us df we'd ever heard of Close to You, and he dug out an old lead sheet of the song. He'd planned to 'cut it himself but had never gotten around to it.

"Herb said 'we should do our own arrangement before listening to the other versions. It worked out so well that we decided to cut it as a single. 4T was really impressed with how it came but on tape, and I realized it had the same commerciaj potential as Bacharach's This Guy's in' Love With You. But I never expected it to sell over two million records." Richard isn't sure how they're going to 'follow We've Only Just Begun, but he 'says that radio KRLA in Los Angeles has been devoting a lot of time to Reason to Believe, the beautiful Tim-Hardin tune which has never really made it as a single. The track is included on the Close-to You LP.

Afte saying goodbye to Engelbert, the Carpenters were off to Chicago, Japan, Hawaii, Alabama, San Francisco, winding up in Los Angeles on 12 for a benefit at Cow State in Long choir master there gave us a lot of help, and we promised that if we ever made it, we'd come back and do a concert, with the proceeds going to the choir fund."
