Lester Kinsolving Religion Writer In the seven years since several religious denominations engaged him as San Francisco's "Night Minister" the Rev. Donald Stuart has answered more than 13.000 calls for help including about 3000 suicide calls. Every night of the year, he (or an occasional substitute minister) goes into The City's Tenderloin district st 10 p.m., searching the streets, bus stations and bars for those in any kind of trouble or need. He works until 6 a.m., equipped with a telephone pager by which an answering service can notify him of calls from those who need help in the middle of the night. Support Cut But the Night Ministry's program is imperiled. The giant United Methodist Church (400 churches in Northern California and Nevada) was one of the seven major denominations which called the Rev. Stuart from a ministry in Lincoln, Neb. But this denomination's officials reportedly have cut off the Methodist support of $2800 a year. Members of the Night Ministry's board of advisors have yet to receive formal notice of this significant cut in their modest budget. They report random Methodist comments such as "Well, the Night Ministry isn't action-oriented" toward social change. By way of "action," however, the San Francisco Police arrested one recently discharged Army veteran who, apparently high on narcotics, had convinced himself that the Night Minister had stolen his discharge papers. For ten minutes (before a passing police car happened to spot the scene) the Rev. Mr. Stuart was obliged to talk and occasionally dodge the enraged veteran, who drew a knife. "It felt like ten hours!" recalled Stuart. When he began his midnight ministry, Stuart was subjected to a stream of ridicule and hostile abuse as he Goldivater, Peanut King WASHINGTON - (NNS) - This year's Georgia Peanut Princess Paulette Brown has taken a poll to end all polls among a variety of presidential candidates and public figures she wanted to know how they stand on peanut butter. Working with Peanut Associates Inc., Miss Brown found out that Sen. Hubert Humphrey's favorite sandwich is a staggering combination of "peanut butter, bologne, cheddar cheese, lettuce and mayonnaise, on toasted bread with lots of catsup on the side." But if you think Humphrey is crazy about peanut butter Sen. Barry Goldwater, past presidential candidate, informed Miss Brown that the Arizona Republican once on a dare used smooth style peanut butter to shave one morning. "And if you don't mind smelling like a peanut for two or three days it's a darn good shaving cream," Uoldwater said. Arthur Thur-mun, Director of Program for the Northern California-Nevada Cor lore nee, said: "We contriiniic'J to the Night Ministry over a number of years but we don't intend to do so indefinitely. Our financial situation is such that we may have to phase out our campus ministry." One Methodist institution In the heart of the Tender loin is Glide Memorial Methodist Foundation. The Rev. Lewis Durham, the Founda-tion's executive director, disclosed during an interview that the Foundation still has more than $5 million in non-property assets. Glide Position Durham went on to explain that Glide Foundation regularly assists six institutions, such as the Council for Religion and The Homosexual, as wel as a project for religion and the arts- As for any assisting of the Night Ministry: "We feel that the Night Ministry is a denominational responsibility," remarked Durham who, like Stuart, is white.
