There wasn't a single drop of free booze present. But there was an opportunity to ease the boredom of so many labor relations stories with a little light-headed nonsense. Be-Sides there aren't that many chances in our business to interview an actress with such incredible statistics as the one who was about to come sweeping through the door.

11 1 1 ja i mm York, April 26, and the seventh in Boston on Friday, April 28. The Mew York-BaJUmor sixth game went right down to "the wire. The Bullets grabbed a five point lead at 93-88 with 4:14 to go, only to have New York take the lead for good at 97-05 on Bradley's jumper from the left baseline with 2:23 left. Lucas said the victory meant "something extra" to him. "This is the first time in a long while that I've been on a team that went past the first round of the playoffs," he said.

NEW YORK (UPI) -The New York Knicks disposed of one toiih foe and now take on another as they hook up with the Boston Celtics in the bent of seven National Basketball Association's Eastern Conference playoff final. The Knicks needed six games to eliminate Baltimore, closing out the series yesterday with a 107-101 victory. "Boston Is one of the strongest a in in the league," said Knicks' coach Bed Holznian, "They're always tough for us. We split the six-game season series so nobody goes into this one with any edge." Bill Bradley, the Knicks' offensive spark in the last two games, said he wasn't gaining any advantage in the upcoming Celtics series. "I've got nothing good to look forward to against Boston since John llavlicek is Just as tough to guard as Jack Marin," Bradley explained, "Dave Cowens is less physical than Wes Unsold, still lie's bigger and faster and is a key to the Celtics' fast break." Walt Frazier, who shared yesterday's scoring honors with Knicks' center Jerry Lucas, with 22 points each, thought the matchup between New York and Boston was even, and agreed with Bradley that their club must contain the Celtics' fast break to stay alive.

The first game of the series will be played in Boston tomorrow night. The second is scheduled for New York on Sunday, the third in Boston on Wednesday, April 19, and the fourth back in Madison Square Garden on Friday, April 21. If additional games are needed, No. 5 will be in Boston on Sunday afternoon, April 23, the sixth in New NawYork (107) OFT DDusrhre 1 II Baltimore (101) Marin 7 71 Trewint 2 1 11 Bradley 4 00 our of Hollywood and signed (are you ready for this?) a niovle contract. Forget all those earnest young men and women slaving away at the Actor's Workshop.

Make way for Vida Blue, boy actor. If his film performance equals the enthralling efforts set by other athletes such as Joe Namalh, Jim Brown and Roman Gabriel, Roh-ert Wagner needn't worry. All these fun and games have provided Blue's mother with a weighty scrapbook to show her neighbors, but have done little to enhance the pitcher's image as a clear-thinking, conscientious athlete. Greater stars than he have wrecked their careers by attempting such follies. Yes, Virginia, even Vida Blue was humble once.

Whether Blue signs to play ball this year or whether he does not, the damage is done. He comes off as a confused, impressionable, spoiled and sadly misdirected young man who is willing to throw away a possibly brilliant career (not to mention a fortune in televised endorsements) for someone else's questionable principles. Blue's great gift lies not behind a desk or a motion picture camera, but on the pitcher's mound, where he can measure his skills against the test of lime. It wasn't just his teammates he let down, he shortchanged himself. Too bad he's too big to be taken across somebody's knee.

THE FACT that Vida Blue's mother hasn't taken him to the woodshed is a tribute to her maternal patience. That kid is some laugh. He comes roaring out of Mansfield, has one colossal season as a major leugue pitcher and zap, he's a superstar! First he turns down $50,000 as being too paltry a sum for his considerable, although largely untested, talents. (You're probably raising a family on a lot less.) Then, ignoring the corporate ladder, he signs on as executive with a company whose principal occupation is manufacturing toilet fixtures, bathroom cabinets and whatever. For this, bachelor Blue receives hefty financial compensation.

Presumably his qualifications in this area include the fact that at some time or other he has used toilet fixtures, bathroom cabinets and whatevers. Blue would have to be too dumb to tell the hot water faucet from the cold not to realize he's being used. It's hard to believe he has "too much pride" to accept baseball's $50,000 offer while acting as a shill for a Southern California plumbing company. And how much public relations can be squeezed out of a 22-year old "retired" pitcher? By next year he'd be as cold as last night's mashed potatoes. But Blue asn't content to cease the charade at that point.

It will doubtlessly distress promoters of loftier athletic exercises to know just how well the high priest of the Derby, Jerry Seltzer, lives. His suite in Oakland's electronic rabbit warren, the Kaiser Center, is large enough to accommodate an elephant stampede. Sophisticated news gatherers chuckle at the Derby and there are indications that Seltzer himself takes only the profit-and-loss reports seriously.

His public relations director is known as a cultural attache. I lis press releases are models of self-mocking drollery. But the common folks, with their blue collars and brass hats, are insane over the Derby. It plugs up a large hole in their otherwise dreary existences. They believe that it is all very serious, that bumping and slamming up there on that track that leads to nowhere'.

Game Hmvlis Will Gel Erving In 3 Years ATLANTA (UPI) -The Atlanta Hawks have announced that Virginia Squires forward Julius Erving will be playing basketball for them when his contract with the American Basketball Association team is up. A Hawks' spokesman said yesterday the 6-7 Erving, one of the Squires' top scorers, had signed an agreement to play for Atlanta after three more seasons with Virginia. The spokesman said Erving has played for Virginia only one year and is committed to a four-year contract.

The Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA picked the big forward Monday in the annual college basketball draft. It has occurred to other people that the derby is a genuine piece of pop-culture. Movies-types have caught the sweet smell of profits. Seltzer made a documentary a year ago that was a dazzling piece of artistry. It's just that nobody bought tickets to watch it.

Then a company started work on a flick entitled, "Kansas City Bomber," with Raquel Welch playing a part based on the life of Ann Calvallo, no doubt. The Derby vizier filed suit. "We are now playing differently than we did during the regular season," said 6-foot-6 Milwaukee forward Bob Dandridge. We've been playing like this since our opening game loss to Golden State." best-of-seven Western Conference finals move to Milwaukee for games No. 3 and 4 Friday night and Sunday.

If the Bucks don't do the unlikely by sweeping the series, the teams will play here in the fifth contest next Tuesday night. However, on the basis of their defensive performance Sunday, a sweep by the Bucks is a possibility. If that happens, it would be an NBA playoff record of eight wins in a row. The mark is seven straight held by the Lakers. INGLE WOOD (UPI) -The defending National Basketball Association champion Milwaukee Bucks go after their sixth straight playoff victory and try to make it 2-0 against the Los Angeles Lakers tonight.

"Everyone knows what's at stake," said the Bucks' Oscar "I don't think either team has any kind of psychological advantage." Irvin made his pitch at the Warriors' last regular season home game against Phoenix. "This (the present edition of the Warriors) is Alvin's team, basically.

"I don't talk to Raquel loo much," said Mama.

"There's not too much in common between the two of us. I mean what could she do to a muu-muu? She'd be lost in one. At the Academy awards, I watched to see if the wrist she broke skating had healed."
