26 Monday, November "16,. 1970 I 3 Below The Ottawa Journal CHRISTMAS SWITCH: Ottawa will have a Santa Claus parade this year with a completely opposite approach to any such parade. Instead of Sanja handing out gifts, Ottawa people are asked to show, up along he parade route with gifts to give to Santa It's an idea, and a good one, put together by the Bank Street. Hub and Sparks Streets merchants for this year's big Dec. 5 parade.

Since the Christmas Exchange won't be collecting toys this year, that aspect of Christmas giving is going to be. worked into the parade Here's how it works. If you have new or nearly new toys that aren't being used, wrap them up and take them to the parade. As the parade passes there will be about no children dressed as elves, collecting these packages. They'll bo loaded into Santa's, sleigh.

Ottawa Fire Department will be helping too, by hauling away the goodies. So far, promises of donations from commercial outlets run into the thousands of pieces. It should be a good chance to test Ottawa's giving power. CAPITAL CAPERS: Then there was the woman with the set of upper false teeth, and a "habit of wrapping them in a tissue in a bedside table drawer. She also has a 15-year-old fox terrier who loves to eat tissues.

Last week this woman walked into her bedroom and saw the dog chewing what she thought, was a piece of bone' It was her bridgework. And the dog had swallowed some of the teeth Slap She felt a little silly trying to explain to the dentist, but he wasn't very impressed. Strange things happened to dentures all the time, he said. And he told the story of another woman who tripped over her dog and fell on her face. She smashed her plate so badly that it couldn't be and had to be fitted for a complete new one.

That accident had happened some time ago, said the dentist. She still hasn't paid for the second set. BANK AND SPARKS: Major Kevin Downey retires from the armed forces tomorrow, after 29 years with thp air force- Friday the 13th didn't bother Dr. E. T.

Bynoe, director of the communicable disease centre, health and welfare. He retired, and his retirement party was that day Flash from Carleton University: Pasties are "out. Poppies are in. At a recent student -shindig, the "phantom stripper' made the substitution Bells Corners Salvation Army Corps raising money for Brownies and Cubs with a bazaar, and fashion show Saturday at the Bells Corners army headquarters. There are shows at 2 and 4 p.m.

And Graeme Fraser has figured this one out: He can prove conclusively MARMADUKE Santo Will Collect Instead of Deliver that people who have a lot of birthdays live longer than those who don't Jr DEPT. OF NICE GUYS: Add the firemen at No. 3 station to your list of nice guys Marina Creations held one of its parties for shut-ins the other day. It's a charitable group that encourages disabled persons, to produce handicrafts, then sells them to raise money for parties and more handicrafts A Bruyere Street woman, completely disabled, could not attend the last party at the Champlain Towers because there was no way she could get down the steep stairs from her apartment A gang from No. 3 showed up and with amazing.

ease and a good deal of humor placed the woman in a car. The car arrived at the Cham-plain Towers to find the firemen there ahead of them. They took the woman In', They also picked her up later, and placed her back in her apartment. ARTIST RETURNS: Dr. Maurice Haycock recently returned to Ottawa after a two-month trip to Newfoundland.

He painted mainly in the Avalon (Peninsula Since he retired from the government service in 1965, his painting has taken him mainly to the Arctic, where he has travelled thousands of miles. In April last year he accompanied an expedition to the North Pole and became the first artist to sketch there He is currently working on a book Of paintings and stories of historic sites of the Arctic. The book will probably be published next year. PARTING SHOT: Bill Scrivens passes along this "Mini, midi, or maxi. They all cost moni." And he says seeing a camel at the circus the other day reminded him of a mouse put together on a cost-plus, basis.

Right now viewers are the victims as video variety shows play a little game that deserves to be shot down. The business in question is Lthe scratch-my-back television guest star bit. Not only has it overstayed Its welcome but it has become such a regular nuisance that it's one area 'where TV should use Scope. Glen Campbell is one of the worst offenders.

Although relatively new to TV, he's such an Ingratiating host that it must be embarrassing for his special guests. His. TV tactic is the economic exchange game where a high-priced star is lured Into a guest shot in return for his appearance 'on the guest's show or TV special. So far this season almost all (3) CBFT. Example: Tom Jones does Glen Campbell; Glen Campbell does Tom Jones; Dean Martin does Glen Campbell; Glen Campbell does Dean Martin; and so on. By the time all the stars have moved along the circuit; there's little time left for any novelty. Originally the TV switching was a network idea which evolved Into an internal promotional system. CBS stars would have other CBS stars on as guests and NBC would do likewise. Lately even the aspect of a rather dull business has changed and the stars will snake the rounds on almost every possible program with the exception of the 'direct competition.
