Alex is lubscqucntly una-' blc to protect himselffrom the violence surrounding him. Ironically, he must be restored to his former vicious self in a Britain that's rapidly turning Fascist. The film ends on a grim, nihilistic note grimmer even than "Little Murders" but with a positive plea (albeit sirnplistically stated) against conformity and for the sanctity of self-expression.

As for man's violent instinct, there's no Kubrick, then, leaves us in a quandary in a blind alley of abject pessimism but he's managed to keep us extraordinarily in-v 1 concerned, alarmed and provoked. Few film-makers have his audacity, his meticulous craftsmanship and his strong, imaginative vision. "A Clockwork Orange" doesn't however, succeed as satire. Most of the intended humor is out of place or lamely conceived, like the sophomoric, speed-ed-up fornication scene involving Alex and two girls, which Kubrick chose to choreograph to the "William Tell" Overture. soon shifts to another plane of thought.

Alex, the rapist-murderer, is imprisoned and made a guinea pig in an experiment with a serum and shock therapy to condition criminals against sex and violence. As he did in "Dr. Strangelove," Kubrick unleashes a harrowing thriller satire set in an unspecified time not too far ahead of our own. Anthony Burgess'' con-fouhding novel of future fear and shock is the basis for; Kubrick's script, which i simply and logically structured, but quite puzzling in respect to the conclusions we're meant to draw from the bizarre and chilling narrative.

The setting is England, perhaps in the late 1970s, and law-ahd-order has broken, down' to a point where criminal' violence is the main political issue of the day. We see appalling vandalism, garbage heaps, roving gangs and general chaos. A horrible lunacy has infected London and, presumably, menaces the entire land. I A youth named Alex (Malqolm McDowell) is the central figure a freaky hoodlum who wears one false eyelash, a black derby hat and white jumpsuit and carries a long billy club with a knife concealed in the hilt.
