She clearly loves her work, and says, "It has its joys and sorrows and I think you've never really finished learning. I sing because for me singing is like breathing. It's my life." The questions have run out, and I wish her good luck with her performance. "No, no," she replies. STARRING WORLD CHAMPION KAREN MAGNUSSEN IN CONCERT SONNY TERRY and BROWNIE MCGHEE with guest JIM EAVES i nmr words aloud that this is a duty she has been persuaded to perform, the dues that have to be paid after the years of success. "I was born in the South of France, in Avignon, and my dream ever since I was very young was to become a singer. I sang at school, in church, for friends, for my family. "Perhaps it is easier for a child with 13 brothers and sisters. You learn to share what you have.

I think that has helped me in a human way. Someone who is an only child doesn't have that experience." She sings in several languages other than French English, German, Italian, and Spanish. Can she speak them all? "No. I speak German the best because the woman who travels with me is German. I have the most difficulty with English, unfortunately." What does she do to relax when she's at home in Paris, between concerts and recording sessions? "Oh, I go to a movie, or go for a walk, or do some shopping." She smiles again, carefully.

There's talk of her first movie. All that is certain at this point is that Robert Aldrich will be the director, and she would rather not say any more for what she calls "superstitious reasons." The inevitable comparison with Edith Piaf comes up. Does she still run into it, even though it's been years since she started out singing the songs on which Piaf had put her own inimtable stamp? "Yes, all the time. But I think she was irreplaceable. I try just to be myself, because in this metier, this'craft, you have to have your own personality." Although she has recorded something like 20 albums and at least as many singles, Mireille Mathieu would rather sing on a stage where there are people Ms "This show is one that should please the whole family." Ottawa Journal "Miss Magnussen's ability to project her charm on ice is as real as the long-stem rose she still uses in her performances."
