Puzzle Actress Finds TV Role Strikes Familiar Note By MATT .MESSINA ) When she was trying to get started as an actress, Cicely Tyson worked for a social agency in New York, as a secretary to the assistant director. Now an established and highly-praised performer, Miss Tyson is a regular member of the forthcoming "East Side, West Side" series (CBS-TV). Her role: A secretary in a social agency, helping star George C. Scott. '"In the series, I'm a sort of gal Friday, doing a little bit of everything. As Scott's secretary, I also go out on actual cases. Whenever I'm needed, I'm there," she explained. How does the fictional role compare with her real life experiences ? "Well, it's different. In real life, I was never permitted to go out into the field. But I did get to interview people. I held the job, on and off, for about two years, before I was able to devote all of my time to acting. Fact ts. Fiction "Social work is a fascinating thing. Actually, it is more dramatic than any script. No one can do it justice in a script it just wouldn't be entertainment," she said. This is her first work in a regular series, although she has appeared in many TV programs, including "The Nurses" and "Americans: A Portrait in Verses." However, emoting on a stage was responsible for her getting Allen in my first stage play, 'Dark of the Moon,' in Vinnette Carroll's production at the Harlem YMCA tn 1958. From that, I went into another stage production, 'Talent '59' and I haven't been out of a job since. I'm lucky," Miss Tyson concluded. On 'Camera' i Cicely Tyaon Mother objected BETTY JOHNSON appears in a filmed sequence on CBS-TV's "Candid Camera" show tonight at 10 playing a store customer frightened by a mouse. the job in "East Side, West Side." Producer David Susskind had been impressed by her work in the off - Broadway production, "The Blacks" and on the Main Stem in "Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright." She was also highly recommended for the part by Scott. She has been honored with the Vernon Rice Award for her work in "The Blacks" and another off-Broadway drama, "Moon on a Rainbow Shawl." Started in 1956 - Her acting career began with a role in a 1956 independently-produced movie. Other films in which she has appeared include "Odds Against Tomorrow" and "The Last Angry Man." As a youngster in Manhattan, Miss Tyson recalled, "I was brought up in a religious atmosphere. I sang in the choir in the mornings, there were prayer meetings on Wednesdays, choir rehearsals on Fridays, and then, of course, in addition to attending Sunday services, I played the piano in Sunday school. Most of the social functions I attended were given by the church, St. John's Episcopal in lower East Harlem. My mother still goes there. "Speaking of my mother, do you know, when she first learned I had decided to become an actress, she wouldn't speak to me. She thought it was disgraceful; that I was going into a life of sin. "She changed her mind after she saw me perform as Barbara i dl FIVE NIGHTS BEGINNING SEPT.
