About teens Meet Mimsy Farmer Her smile wearing thin, Mimsy signs autographs at the premiere. Being an actress is work, work. Recent high school graduate tells what it's like to be an actress On recent movie junket in Jackson Hole, Mimsy Farmer does the Twist, as do James McArthur and his wife, Joyce. Mimsy and James are in the film. By MARILOU MCCARTHY Most teen-agers, and most people, would jump at the chance to attend a full-blown, all-out Hollywood premiere more so if they could go as one of the movie's stars, a position that guarantees attention.

Most people, yes but it's questionable if 18-year-old Mimsy Farmer will raise a foot off the ground the next time a premiere comes her way. Mimsy, a hazel-eyed blonde who was graduated from high school last February, has her first starring role in "Spencer's Mountain," a movie that Warner Brothers recently spent three full days introducing in Jackson Hole, Wyo. After all those hours of being interviewed by (and being polite to) some 250 reporters, photographers, radio and television representatives, Mimsy's smile became slightly strained and she's left with the distinct feeling that premieres are definitely more work and worry than wonder. "Oh, it's exciting all right, and the people have been very nice," sighed Mimsy between interviews with a Texas disk jockey and a New York reporter. "But occasionally I wish I could just go off alone somewhere.

It was really more fun when we were out here filming the movie. Then it was just us and the people who live here. When we weren't working, I'd go riding or fishing." In the line of duty, Mimsy autographed everything from a leg cast to a cowboy hat; rode a chairlift to the top of a mountain (photographers waiting at base and summit); helped dedicate a mountain; attended the actual premiere (but had to leave for another interview once the movie appeared on the screen); and had her toes stepped on by the well-meaning but less-than-graceful square dancers and twisters of the press corps. Half-shy, half-sophisticated Mimsy (chosen for her role because of "the purity in her enjoyed one genuine unharassed moment of fun. It came during a chuck wagon dinner on the last night of the premiere gala when the spotlight moved to someone else.

The hostess had invited five young folk singers to perform and Mimsy, sneaking away from her adult dinner partners, sat herself cross-legged on the floor and clapped happily to the guitars and banjos for an hour. Next morning, a very tired Mimsy prepared to fly back to Hollywood (where she's lived most of her life), to her drama lessons, to her family. "This premiere thing is all right if you want to be a star," mused the teen-ager who was "discovered" while eating a sandwich in a Hollywood drug store, "but I want to be an actress. If you want to last in this business, you have to have talent. Beauty doesn't stay around long enough." Gently-bred Mimsy regards Hollywood with a healthy cynicism, partially inherited from her parents, former newspaper reporters who have stressed the importance of books, art, and music in the glitter of California.

Her father is a rare-coin dealer in Los Angeles. "Hollywood's a tinsel town, it's filled with phonies and everything's gimmicky," according to Mimsy. "I don't like phonies, or prejudice, or hypocrisy. I know, I'm probably in the wrong business, but I think of acting as a form of expression of creating something from nothing of course, there's the ego thing, too." She wants to get married and have a family, but not for another 10 years. Meanwhile, she'll try for good parts, swim, play tennis, read, paint and date occasionally.
