She was also present in a box adorned with a large bouquet of roses on the raiL The staging, however, was of mixed value.

Much of the comedy, for example, was too broad. The tenderer moments came off best. Another Debut Also making her Met debut was Austrian mezzo-soprano Hertha 'Lord Pengo' Gently Civilized; 'ftosenfravalier' Waltzes Back liese Rothenbergrer, who made up for her rather light voice by her excellence as a singing: actress and her loveliness. The new conspirators were Rosalind Elias (the mosfbosomy within memory) and Paul Franke and the new Von Faninal was Karl Doench. All were commendable.

By DOUGLAS WATT Richard Strauss' master By JOHN CHAPMAN In the 1930s millionaires still had money and they encouraged their own self-esteem by buying masterpieces of art.

The greatest salesman of art was Joseph Lord Duveen, "LORD PENGO" Play by S. N. Behrman, produced by Paul Gregory and Amy Lynn at the Royale Theatre, Nov. 19, 1962. THE CAST: Toepper, a handsome young woman who played Octavian, the rose-cavalier of the title, but who never succeeded (perhaps to her personal credit) in creating the illusion of being a young man.

Her voice is a good enough one but somewhat colorless, as was her acting. Lorin Maazel, the young conductor who made his Met debut a couple of weeks back with "Don Giovanni," tackled the Strauss score with all his wits at work but not with enough of the ease that is required and that more experience should bring. Good Baron Ochs Otto Edelmann, who has-been heard as Baron Ochs here before, turned in an admirable performance. Now Behrman has put some of this art world and some of Duveen into a play, "Lord Pengo," which opened at the Royale Theatre last evening. It is more a portrait than itl is a play, though, and Charles Boyer has brought this portrait into three-dimensional life with all the charm, artifice and skill imaginable. This is an art-gallery comedy, quietly humorous and subtly ironic as Boyer pits mil- Charles Boyer King of art metlenmen lionalre against millionaire, art-lover against slob, in the all-absorbing work of selling Old Masters for more than he paid for them. Glorified Pitchman This portrait, so vibrantly brought to life by Boyer, is of a man so obsessed by his mission that he has no time for his wife and no understanding of his son, although he loves both deeply. Lord Pengo is a show man with a cast of characters uch as Reynolds, Rembrandt, Giorgione and Van Dyck a glorified pitchman who talks to the yokels in terms of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Behrman is careful not to iden tify too accurately any of Du- veens or Pengo's clients; but now and then one can imagine that there is on the stage a Mel- Jon, a Barnes, a Kresge, a rick or whom have you. Not all of them are careless spenders, un less it's a woman who wants to pick up "a little something" for her new husband on their third anniversary. Two Moving Scenes This is a quiet play, not at all like Harry Kurmtz' "The Re dining Figure" of a few seasons back, which made art a fairly raucous racket. It is a civilized play, for Behrman is a civilized writer. It is not very emotional, except in two scenes one in which Lord Pengo and his son part in anger, and a very touching finale in which Pengo admits 'Mihtyr THE otmmr 2AMUOTS TMWIT ana (Mill WARNER Theatre Directory 6 FINAL PERFS.
