Sac. Tehama motor FRIDAY MARCH 29, 1912 President Taft baa sent the report of his tariff board to congress and from this report there is but one conclusion to be drawn. The president committed a grave error when he vetoed the tariff measure passed by Democrats aud Republican Insurgents, This report does not Justify a single change In (he rates adopted by the vetoed bill or proposed Jn the pending 1)111. Francis J. Heney and Rudolph Sm-eckles, who were so closely associated In the graft prosecutions and who were Uie founders of the progressive Republican party in California, hav parted company.

Mr. Spreekols is fo Senator LaFoliette and Mr. Heney i tov Colonel RooseveU. Both are lead ing forlorn hope. 1 COURTHOUSE NEWS.

Mary Glide Goethe has given a powe of attorney to Lizzie H. Glide, A decree of final distribution of the estate of William Russell, deceased, to Florence, "Jack" Russell, J. W. Rug sell and Susan Mary Allen, has been filed. A marriage license was Issued this morning to LeRoy Campbell Peck, a native of California, 27 years of age and Bernice Prances Qulnn, also a native of California, 19 years of Both are residents of Courtland.

Some of the Smart Alecks who hafl rather be kicked than not to be noticed at all in the columns of the "Democrat" will have to get their advertising In some other way. In IMS Angeles the people utilize schoolhouses for voting places. This seems to us to be a progressive step that might be emulated with advantage by the people of The Call says President Taft gave California the Pacific-Panama exposition, and the Bulletin Bays Colonel Roosevelt gave us tho canal that made the exposition possible. So there you are. By a Vote of 11 to 1 San Francisco authorized the issuance pf $8,000,000 in bonds for a civic center It would be very gratifying if such a feeling of civic enthusiasm could be awakened in Yolo county.

From the big cities comes the report meat prices have reached the point known, in twenty-two years. Lack of rain, causing scant grass for cattle and sheep and a shortage of alfalfa and barley for hogs is the cause cited by most of the dealers Governor Johnson, a candidate for delegate at large on the Roosevelt ticket, has been challenged to meet William B. Smythe, candidate for the same position on the'LaFollette ticket, in joint debate, but the governor has shown no inclination to accept the chaljenge. It is a significant circumstance that Governor "Wilson is the only Democratic candidate who is making a contest in every state in the Union. His 'opponents are working the favorite son stunt over time.

The rank and file of the Democracy' ought to have no difficulty in determining what this means. If some of those who are persistently agitating the parole of Abe Ruef would make the same effort in behalf of Dr. W. P. Burke, who was convicted upon circumstantial evidence, and whom hundreds of people believe to be innocent, they could he commended for doing a humane and just act.

It is current rumor Warden Hoyle is to be transferred to Folsom, Warden Reilly is to lose his job and ex-Sheriff Finn of San Francisco is to he appointed warden at Sau Quen- tln. We have never been disposed to criticise Governor Johnson's appointments, but we will have to draw the line at Finn. The state board of control and the state highway commission are at loggerheads and threatening to air their differences in court. The trouble seems to be that the commission wants to control its own affairs so far as letting contracts are concerned while the board of control insists on being the whole show. If the space can be obtained In the new Vallejo and Northern railroad depot it would be a capital idea for the Pacific-Panama Exposition local committee to collect and maintain an exhibit of the products of the county.

Such location would be central and we believe that such an enterprise would receive liberal support from the public-spirited people of the county. County Registrar Haub is authority for the statement that in Sacramento 2400 men whose names appeared on the register of 1U10 an Republicans have changed their party affiliations and are now registered as Democrats. Some of these men probably registered as Republicans to help some Republican Candidate for governor but no doubt some of the changes are duo to the discontent in the Republican party and the probability that the next president will a Democrat. A REMONSTRANCE Editor i note in you last issue of the sale of a 40-foot lo fronting on north Second street, be twean Court street and the alley which is to be covered with a corru gated iron building aud used as warehouse for R. B.

Cranston. There is probably no recourse fo those of us who have lived in Wood land over half a century in the hop of seeing some restrictions put agains the construction of such buildings in the business district. The building by Berg estate on th alley back from the City Hall shoulc never have been permitted. The sam Is true of the Electric garage. Now we are to have a repetition of thl dangerous and unsightly barn build mg, between the postoffice and the new courthouse (which we did not ge but were not without hope until hear of this character of building tha is to go up right in the foreground) How can we expect to get a new cour house, if anyone who will pay thi price, can buy a lot so near that pop ular public square, and erect anything he pleases thereon? The owner has the undeniable rlgh to sell his properly to whomsoever he pleases, ami the purchaser as a rule has the same right to build anything he pleases thereon, but in such an in stance as this, the city trustees should pass an ordinance relegating all ware houses to the railroad switches and prohibiting any such buildings as this to be constructed so near the business center.

No other town in California of the importance of Woodland would allow it From my personal viewpoint the re- maiuiug properties of. Mesdames Lambert and Gallup will be damaged for more than the prices they are to receive for tile land sold. Some of us who have struggled long and hard, spending much energy anc no small amount of money, to build up the neighborhood in question, are about to see the result of our efforts seriously damaged by those who have been made beneficiaries, without cost to themselves. Such is life, but I still hope the city authorities will become interested in this matter. Respectfully yours ONE WHO WAS HERE WHEN TILE TOWN WAS BORN Case Ready to Co to Jui) (Continued fr.om third page.) Btbjr won't cuffer fire with eroap if apply Dr.

1 Electric Oil It Mti iiighest price ever paid for any laud 'u Washington. Mr. Wood was called to the stand, but before any questions were asked Mr. Partridge decided to withdraw him and rest. There was some talk as to whether the jury would be taken to view the property and the matter was finally left to the jurors.

None of expressed a desire to make the trip and several of them signified that had gained all the information desired about the location of the and from the photographs exhibited by Witness Knight. When the trial was resumed this morning J. H. Geddis was recalled in rebuttal. When he was asked what was the market value of the waterfront north of the Southern Pacific bridge on September IS, 1811, an objection was Interposed and sustained.

Judge Grant asked witness about a piece of waterfront 80x80 feet above the new Southern Pacific bridge with a view of showing that the title to he property is not valid and for that cannot he sold at the market value of other property. The question was objected to but was admitted, but when he was asked the direct question as to why the land is not. as salable as "ither property an objection was sustained, and no other questions along that lino were allowed. Thomas Harrison was recalled in re- jntial. Judge Grant offered pages 2C4 and 2K of the records of Yolo county, lated showing a plat of Wash- ngton, from which it appears that of the 240 feet described as the illiam property was dedicated as a public street.

The record was ruled out on an objection. Witness Harrison was not permitted relate a conversation he had with Captain Wit ham concerning his title a portion of the laud he recently sold. Practically all tile questions asked witness wore ruled out on the ground that they related to collateral matters. When Harrison was excused Judge Grant began to slate what be expected to prove by another witness, jut was stopped by an objection and he COMI-I expressed the opinion that lie bast way was to produce the witless, which Judge Grant declined to He C'xcepted to the ruling of the court and announced that the defense rested. Doth sides agreed on a general verdict.

Judge Grant stated that ae the only issue before the court is a question of value, in which the burden of the proof is on the defendant, he claimed tlie right to the opening and cloning argument. The court ruled that the plaintiff has the right, to open and close, and Judge Grant cxcented to the ruling. Air. Partridge was making the opening argument when lliln report closed. J.
