TUESDAY CCCC SAN FRANCISCO. DECEMBER 1, 1936 TUESDAY 21 SVVANSON OF DONS INTERCEPTS ACQUARELLI (LOYOLA) PASS -V i4 I -ri i NO SURPRISE Appointment Confirms Rumors By Harry Borba Slender George Malley, expert boxer and trained for the law, yesterday assumed the burden of building the football glory at the University of San Francisco.

Hardly had the studentry recovered from the shock of "Spud" Lewis' resignation before Athletic Manager Rod Chisholm announced his successor. Malley has been Lewis' coaching assistant this year and his appointment confirms rumors that have been rampant all season that Lewis, dissatisfied with the Dons' set-up, was on the way out and that Malley would succeed him. Lewis stuck to his resignation despite tearful entreaties of his players on the way back from Los Angeles Sunday night. Although Malley's salary was not announced it is believed to be less than Lewis was getting. Spud was pulling down $5,000 since retrenchment two years ago and had an option for another 1,000 if the athletic receipts showed a certain profit.

Malley probably is drawing down $4,500. Ho will be permitted to pick his own assistant although, on advice of Lewis, he would like to have several. Malley is a graduate of Santa Clara, played football there under Eddie Keinholz and finished his last season when Adam Walsh was coaching his first year.
