CURRENT COMMENT. SCOBIE SANITARIUM, WHICH DR.BEEBE WILL SUPERINTEND A university professor says thero are too many women iu college at Berkeley, their presence militating against tho progress of the university. Doubtless he la correct. Co-education Is falling Into disfavor even airing those who strongly advocated It a few years The man who does not regularly read his home paper Is a subject for sympathy. He is very much like man without a country.

He Is like a homeless cow that has no regular grazing place but wanders about the country feeding on weeds and brambles. No matter how many other papers a man may read, he should always be a subscriber to the home paper. Biverside Enterprise. On the 17th Instant there was a short dedication service held at the beautiful new building just finished at the comer of Page street and Masonic avenue, San Francisco. This building, of cream pressed brick, has been erected by the Scobie Memorial Sanitarium, a corporation consisting of Mrs.

James Scobie president, Mr. Richard f. MeBean, Miss Isabella F. McBean, Miss J. C.

F. McBean and an old friend, Dr. Charles E. Beebe, as medical superintendent. Mrs.

Scobie and Dr. Beebe had a very fine building at Watsonvtlle, Santa Cruz county, devoted to hos- Tom Watson, who successfully passed through the trying ordeal of posing as a Populist nominee for president during the recent campaign, sees no hope for the Democracy. He also declines to have anything to do with the reorganization of the Democratic party, for which the Democrats are duly grateful. Now, If Mr. Hearst will only emulate Mr.

Watson's example and leave the Democratic party to its own devices the party will lie In a position to reorganize. It the recent election means anything, It means that the people are weary of hyphenated Democrats. They have had a surfeit of Gold-Democrats, Silver Democrats, Bryan Democrats, Four years hence they will be ready to assemble under the banner the plain Democracy ana fight for and with leaders whose loyalty to party principles Is not shaken by every adverse wind that blows over the political Watsonvtlle Register. The building throughout Is furnished In excellent taste, and Is fitted up with all the latest Improvements, The operating department Is equipped with all the latest appliances of modern surgery and connected with a complete distilling plant in the op- orating and preparation rooms. The Institution is open to any reputable physician who may treat his patients there and he may rest fully assured of receiving nil professional courtesies.

Dr. Charles E. Beebe, who for a number of years practiced In Woodland, and la well and favorably known in Yolo county, is the superintendent 1 1 1 rr PE86Y FROM PARIS BAGS AT COST. My entire line of Peggy from Paris leather bags at cost. These are new goods in all the latest effects.

I I I 1 I 1 KEAX, ESTATE TBAHSJEBS We suggest that It ia hardly In good taste for the Republican papers of the second district to berate Congressman Bell now that he has been deleated. The campaign is over. With Its end let 3tB asperities' and bitterness be dismissed. The victors can aftord to be Just, even generous. Mr.

Bell maoe a good fight. His run was phenomenal under the circumstances. He has no cause to be ashamed of the result, and he can point with pardonable pride to the magnificent his home county, a Napa Im 0d JJJ'yjS was on the wrong side ol And he was aligned with a party that is at war with the best Interests ot California. But while Republicans have a right to congratulate themselves over.the redemption of the second district, they can well afford to admit that they found in Theodore A. Bell a hard horse to curry.

He got caught in a that's Tribune The phenomenal run made by Hon. Theodore A. Bell In tho second congressional campaign, proves conclusively that he was the most popular man In the district. He made the fight with no campaign fund behind him, with no aid from the outside, with no newspaper help except the united support of the Democratic papers of his own district. He made a clean, honorable campaign, based on his public record.

He made no personal attack on bis opponent. He claimed nothing to which the record did not plainly show he was entitled He had a big party majority to overcome. The Democratic press carefully refrained from attacking McKinlay's private character, although the opportunity was offered. On the other hand, tho Republican managers had an abundance of cola at their disposal. They had all the necessary resources of their congressional and state committees to draw upon.

Selected speakers from the outside were sent Into the district, and even the governor of the state was drafted into service. A bold and deliberately mendacious plot was concocted In San Francisco to try to spoil Bell's splendid record In congress, by falsely stating, and sticking to that he did nothing. They even compromised one of their own United States senators In carrying out their diabolical plot They enlisted the aid of the railroad companies. They descended to tricks, smaller and lower than were ever before attempted In a congressional race. The party lasli was sternly applied In every county And yet in a district which gavr Roosevelt a plurality of 12,000 votes Theodore Bell only fell short 100C votes.

There Is no parallel to it in the history of the state and Theodore Bell stands today with a character unsullied, and as the best loved man in Mary Briggs Connolly and husband to Julia Northwest of sec. 8 north, range 1 west, excepting two rods off south side R. "Good news travels fast," and the thousands of bad back sufferers in Woodland are glad to learn that prompt relief Is within their reach. Many a. lame, weak and aching back is bad no more, thanks to Doan's Kidney Pills. Many are telling the good news ofHhelr experience with the Old Quaker remedy. Hera Is an example worth reading: Mrs.

Geo. Mattern, wife of Geo. Mattern, tailor, Marysville, says: "It is all of six years since I first noticed pain in my back. To any woman whose housework is easy to perform or arduous, a lame or aching back is a positive uuisance. In fact, she cannot work with any degree of comfort My back was bothering me severely when I first noticed Doan's Kidney Pills advertised in a Marysville paper and I made up my mind to take a course of the treatment and got my Urst box.

After talcing it the backache ceased. I have recommended Doan's Kidney Pills to others since they cured me, and will continue to do so." Plenty more proof like this from Woodland people. Call at Leithold's drug store and ask what their customers report. For sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents.
