He came to San Francisco in 1859 to practice his trade, eventually establishing his own business on Clay Street. Two major influences helped establish his painting career.

The first were his studies with Samuel Brooks in 1863; the second was his new bride, Elizabeth Emerson, who was an artist herself. By 1868, William Keith was painting full-time. During the next few years, the Keiths traveled and studied in Europe, returned to the U.S. and opened a studio in Boston, then relocated in the Bay Area in 1872. Art historians divide Keith's works into two periods.
