I recently 1 eft my office at noontime with "my friend, Frank Markey." By night time we were in the capital of our country--Washington. Here we were wrapped in a -mantle of history. We spent the entire evening talking of the many who had come and gone from world-famous city. A city -of beauty.

The simple, democratic looking White House inen ment the Lee mansion in the distance, high upon his beautiful hill Arlington. Early the next day we journeyed south, passing through the historic and interesting old city of Fredericksburg and the battlefields that surrounded it. A marvelous paved road now leads direct to Richmond from Washington over a lovely rolling country that difficult to surpass. But the one thing that impressed me over this route was the absence of advertising signs along the way. We had the clean beauty of the country to drink in, without cbnox- ious interference.

I hope the true is soon to crtme when this beautiful country of ours will no longer he spotted with these un- wholerfomc signs. In Fredericksburg we lu-ichcd at an odd little Inn--very quaint and interesting. We were served most courteously warmed beside an open fire. I am a lover the SouthJand, and I want my Southern friends to know it. Nowhere in the vtorld are tiierc more de-i lightful people.

There is a poise and a serenity about them all! that draws you to thorn again and again. In Richmond we drove about that''interesting and 'historic city. We viewed the sUtues of Lee, Stuart--and my idol of thtpn jail, that sturdy and her-oic "Stonewall" Jackson. I am the a northern veteran of the Civil war, but whenever I view the of a Southern soldier I am filled with a feeling of pride in and conviction--for tyth the blue and the grey were, aft- all--Americans! riding' through Virginia it was a wonderfully happy expcri- to view markings of historic spots along the way placed the state Juctaray department.
