The citizens of these smaller communities are staging an all-out fight for new industry. The competition has never been as keen. Ottawa may be a prestige address for a would-be new industrial newcomer, but not at the asking prices. When the special tax on new commercial buildings is taken into consideration, the price of locating in Ottawa may be too stiff a premium to pay-it is high time that all concerned in the city take a closer look at the situation in line with reality. If Ottawa is sincere about new industry, the price will have to be right.

Mayor Reid has the right idea but he still has a long way to go. vi 1 rood lacis The Loeb-IGA chain was the source of one of the most intensive studies recently of the Canadian super market picture. The report, published in a series of stories in the trade publication "Superm a Methods" was the result of an eight-week on-ihe-scene study. It covered the sales activities of a "typical" supermarket, and the findings were designed for the information of food-liner operators acorss Canada. One of the highlights was the sales characteristics of products selling to both English and French speaking customers, which filled a gap that has been lacking in previous market analysis.

For example, the study indicated that French-Canadian shoppers buy more food, buy larger amounts of baking supplies- and personal hygiene products than their counterparts in English speaking sections. Compared with American supermarkets, the study shows mat Canadian stores sell an average of 1,000 more items in 1,000 less square feet of space. 7 82 130 9 284 28 10 450 $68 68 68 4-1 130 285 28 Hosco 900 82 130 9 285 28 10 14 19 Mylama 15500 Alliance 190 $9 9 Ang 4pr 125 $45 45 Asbestos 505 $25 25 Atl Sug 2400 $24 24 Bath AP 125 $61 61 BeU Phone 969 $58 58 6 Chipman 165500 Comdore 400 Manitoba 1000 Couvrette A 150 Delta Elec 250 Dolsan 101900 Lease 1000 CPR CPR pr Refract Tire A Util CWN Gpr Westng Chrysler Clairton Col Cell Computing Con Bldg Con Con Paper Con Gas Crain RL Cygnus A Cvgnus 45 25 24 61 58 Newnor -j 1800 -1 r4 ai'-i 52 500 335 335 335 100 $8 8 8 100 21 21 21 1 100 400 400 400 5 -5 Rouyn 51 10 15 13 10 14 13 Nick Rim 13 1 BA Oil Nisto 200 51 13 725 88 32 1745 $44 43 43 5000 5000 3500 800 3000 2125 191 30 Vm 6- 13 Brinco Norbeao 65 $40 40 40 10 1 192 14 1 East Sul) 100 Equity Ex 181400 Fox Lake 15500 $13 IS" 1W4 192 14 16 -1 Norlex Norpax 13 15 24 595 $30 30 1455 $6 8 125 $13 13 750 $24 24 125 $55 55 25 $52 52 245 $8 8 FOR RENT 116 LIS6AR STREET (Near Elgin) Entire Top Floor Over t.M q. ft. device finds silver underground WASHINGTON (AP) An atomic laboratory device for determining small amounts of a wide range of chemical ele- ments is being tested as a tool for detecting silver, the U.S. in-; terior depart ment announced Friday. The device has been dubbed the "silver snooper" by its de-; signers, Dr. F. E.

Senftle, Dr. A. F. Hoyte and P. Martinez, geological survey physicists who believe it may help in the search to bolster the short supply of silver in the U.S.

"First field tests are ex- tremely encouraging," the phy-. sicists reported. "Based on the principle of 'neutron activation the device hurls neutrons some of the building blocks of the atom at the ground," said ftle. "The more silver there is in the ground target and the more neutrons we bombard it with, the greater and more reliable the count of the radioactive silver atoms."
