(UPI) Gary Player, hoping only to make the cut made it a lot deeper than he thought to day when he cut the pins from under Bob Murphy and other second round finishers for a one-stroke lead in the $150,000 Thunderbird Golf Classic. Putting beautifully, to use his own words, Player cele brated his return to competi tive golf after a six-week lay off at his farm in South Afri ca with a 34-33-67 that put him at 137, seven strokes un der par after 36 holes. JUST RIGHT Coming on the heels of his opening round 70, Player five under par second round showing moved him a shot in front of the first day leader, Bob Murphy, who was at 138 with his 70 today and two shots up on Mason Rudolph with his 139.

Arnold Palmer's 70, which satisfied him considering he had hit only 100 balls in all since last Sunday, left him tied with Tommy Aaron and Chi Chi Rodriguez four strokes back at 141. Aaron had a 68 and Chi Chi checked in with a 71. VENTURI HAS 145 Behind them came Miller Barber, Phil Rodgers and South Africa's Harold Kenning, all at 143, followed by Dan Sikes, Art Wall and Dudley Wysong at 144.

Ken Venturi, the former U. S. Open champ, who now is a part-timer on the tour, was a stroke in back at 145, along with Bert Weaver and Church Courtney. They saw the fantastic Brazilian soccer star score two goals in 10 shots and play an excellent game at Oakland Coliseum last night. But without electronic repeats and experts to point out just how good Pele is perhaps the majority of the record 29,162 spectators didn't appreciate the finesse of the world's top player.

MIRKO FANTASTIC They understood, however, the amazing goal protection of Mirko Stojanovic and the alert hounding of Trond Hoft-vedt. Had not these Oakland (Clippers and their teammates played outstanding defense. Santos might have beaten them, 10-1. Instead, the score was only 3-1. Stojanovic, the 1 a-- i a -b goalkeeper who leads the North American Soccer League with 11 shutouts, simply was out of this world.

Soccer experts claimed to have seen better games by netminders, but a i 1 1 that he usually was at the right place at the right ime, stopping shots, falling to the turf and bouncing up to deflect still other attempts. 15 SAVES Mirko was credited with 15 saves and three stops on the 34 shots blasted at him by one of the world's three best soccer teams. the handsome 26-year-old Norwegian given the difficult job of guarding Pele, proved equal to the task. He stole the ball from the Brazilian many times, and as for the suggestion that he wasn't doing his best, listen to what Pele said: "I always try my best. If I don't, people lose interest in me, and if they lose interest in me, they lose interest in soccer." Antonio Fernandez, the Santos coach, praised the Clippers as the best United States team he has seen, and the Brazilians have faced Boston, New York, Cleveland, Kansas City, Atlanta, St.

Louis and Washington. Santos caught a plane last night for New York to play Benfica of Portugal, led by the fabulous Euseoio, at Yankee Stadium tomorrow. GARY PLAYER'S Player, dressed completely in white instead of his custo mary black, had six birdies, and the ones that had the gallery really buzzing came on the fifth hole where he sank a 20-footer and on the 14th where he dropped one from 30.

"That's the one I remem ber most," he laughed, referring to his putt on the 14th which was a straight-in, no-curl job. "This is a real bonus he said about his 67. "I came here hoping just to make the cut and play four rounds of tournament golf before the World Series of golf next week. As the British Open champion, the 32-year-old Player will be one of four competitors in the World Series at Akron, Ohio, next week. The other three will be Master champion Bob Goalby, PGA titleholder Julius Boros and U.S.

Open king Lee Trevino. U.S. Open king Lee Trevino. IN CREEK TWICE Murphy, the 25 year old former U.S. amateur champ who started the day two tsrokes in the front after his first round 68, was up the creek twice today.

Once on the 11th and again on the 12th. He salvaged his par on the 11th with a heroic 30-footer, but he stubbed his toe on the 12th where he took his second penalty shot in as many holes and a bogey. "I hit some real bad shots," he said. "I didn't drive the ball the way I have been." Still, it wasn't a complete disaster for Murph. The crowd, which hyped him up in the first round, stayed with him in the second one and cheered him as if he were a combination Bobby Jones-Ben Hogan on each of his five birdies.

SAME AS A 67 Rudolph had three birdies in his bogey-free round and it was exactly as he said: 'Real solid but nothing really spectacular." Rudolph, the bespectacled tour vet from Tennessee, had an opening round 70 and he remembered that his two rounds so far were exactly the way he opened the Thunderbird when he wound up winning it in 1966. 1 nr.j4. -Age.
