Dally 111 KIOEAI' ST. U7-48M well adapted by John Lewis Carlino from David Ely's novel, and director John Frankenheimer, with the assistance of James Wong Howe's fluid black and white photography, has done it up in a stark and uncompromising style. A grinly climax Indeed, its climax is a grisly and shattering bit of business. Possibly, it's all a little too low keyed and deliberate, and there is a hint of artincss in the presentation, but it is an engrossing thriller for ell that. And Rock Hudson, as the revamped man.

does better than you might expect in a difficult part. Will Geer, Salome Jens, Jeff Corey and Richard Anderson are ominous as assorted "company" employees, with John Randolph and Frances Reid credible as the transformed banker and his wife. 3rd and FINAL Julie Oskar Christie Werner TODAY 3 PAUL JULIE IT TEARS YOU APART WITH SUSPENSE! fh i lahrpnhQit nEuimnn (moreius in men -m) is the inability of people to escape from the synthetic surroundings and artificial stimuli of a sterile existence, to get involved in something outside the narrow range of their understanding. What makes Blow-Up so fascinating, and the quite extraordinary movie it is, is the accumulation of simmering tensions and the myriad of minute detail with which the theme is explored. As the photographer races recklessly around the London locales, alternately snapping pictures of mangy derelicts and glamorous fashion models, indulging himself with 'he purchase of some attractive antique that has caught his eye, or casually engaging in a playful sex orgy with a couple of obliging teen-agers, the arrogant nature and impersonal attitudes of an uncertain personality arc well and truly projected.

What propels him into a momentary mood of self-appraisal is a roll of film he has casually shot in a secluded park as he followed a pair of romantic strollers. When woman desperately tries to re-trie'e the film, even turning un at his studio willing to trade her favors for the unexposed pictures, the fellow's curiosity is piqued, and send-ine her away with a bocus roll, he proceeds to develop the real one. A art of murder And in a brilliantly conceived succession of shots. Anton-ioni introduces into the proceedings not only a definite shaft of plot, but also an in-tricuing hint of mystery, for in Wow-up after blow-up of the nccalives, the camera is re-vealed to have caught an act of murder. All at once there is a moral issue for the young man to face, the resolving of which (or the non-resolving) occupies the balance of the picture.

But be warned don't expect anv pat answers to the problem posed. In fact, you I may be justifiably confused by the ambiguity of Mr. Anton-ioni's climax, which is suggestive of various shades of meaning. And he has drawn a highly persuasive performance from David Hemminns as the jaded hero, an artful blending of i matic narrative approach, and I he whole cryptic structure of his reflection of cert a i aspects of contemporary society. Tin' truths of life That happens to be Anton-ioni's way of doing things.

And if it frequently seems undefined and unrelated, even untidy, it, nonetheless, offers a vivid and valid interpretation of some of the truths of life. Actually, Blow-Up, despite an over abundance of symbolism and the redundancy of certain passages, is not too difficult a work to fathom. By making the hero of his story a spry, selfish, successful young magazine photographer, very much a part of the "in-crowd" of today's swinging London scene, Antonioni captures in a few deft strokes the unrecognized dilemma of a man restricted by the nature of his environment and his alienation from reality. Inability to escape What Antonioni is trying to get across, then, at least on a basic level of communication. Ml 1 HITCHCOCK'S TECHNICOLOR mm I TORI.

Up will not be to everyone taste. But while it may be disturbing, and even frustrating, it is still a film that generates a special kind of movie excitement. Regent SECONDS A Paramount Release. Produced by Edward Lewi s. Directed by John Frankenheimer.

Screenplay by John Lewis Carlino, based on the novel by David Ely. Starring Rock Hudson. A fascinating, if frightening, notion is explored in the Paramount film Seconds, the current attraction at the Regent Theatre. The idea of a discontented middle aged man taking the opportunity to be "reborn'' through an extensive program of physical and facial alteration offered by a mysterious corporation (who even oblig-inelv arrange a convenient death, complete with corpse, for the old self) is Oie sort of science fictionizing that has a chilling air of plausibility about it, and an intriguing sense of the macabre in the unfolding. The Scarsdale banker who undergoes such a metamorphosis in Seconds is one of those vaguely unhappy and confused individuals who.
